MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A 20-year-old corrections deputy who was accused of having sex with an inmate was back in court on Tuesday.

On December 30, the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department released a statement saying they were made aware of the allegations, prompting a criminal investigation.

Akira Jones was then indicted and charged. She is now out on bond.

“You have been indicted in a one-count indictment for sexual contact with prisoners; Class E Felony,” said Judge Jennifer Fitzgerald.

The court is now giving Jones a little more than a month to obtain defending counsel after she stated she is still working on hiring an attorney.

The judge tells Jones that if she is convicted, she could spend the next 1 to 6 years in lockup and she would be required to pay a $3,000 fine.

Jones is scheduled to appear in court on May 6 along with her attorney.
