Nagpur: Sadar Police on Wednesday detained the driver and conductor of a private bus for allegedly looting cash from passengers by threatening to abandon them midway in the jungle during night. Cops also detained the bus (NL01/B2206) till the matter was resolved.

More than 110 persons, mostly workers, had booked the bus from Secunderabad for Banaras and Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh. The bus had 58 seats. However, the bus driver, cleaner and the conductor allegedly took Rs 1,500 each from the passengers and decided to carry them beyond capacity on Monday. In the dead of the night, the bus driver parked the bus in the jungle. He and the conductor asked the passengers to get down and allegedly demanded Rs 5,000 more from them.

Left with no option, the passengers collected money and handed them over the cash. The bus then started its onward journey. After crossing the Maharashtra border, the driver again stopped the bus near Sai Dhaba and asked the passengers to disembark the vehicle saying that another bus would come to pick them up. As the passengers refused to get down, the driver and cleaner thrashed some of them. The conductor then whipped out a knife and threatened them of dire consequences.

When some of the passengers tried to overpower them, the duo decided to take the bus to Nagpur. In Sadar area, the bus stopped again. A goon, who was known to the driver, boarded the bus and started threatening the passengers. Two traffic cops passing-by heard the noise and intercepted the bus. Cops then took the bus and the passengers to Sadar Police Station.

Further investigations are underway.
