According to authorities, the man, whom Fort Lauderdale police identified as David Boatswain, was playing with a remote control boat in a canal when it got tangled up on the other side.

Boatswain started swimming towards the boat when fire rescue workers said at some point he went under the water and did not come back up. He was later pronounced dead at Broward Health Medical Center, according to FLPD Spokesperson Casey Liening.

Investigators said his death appears to be an accidental drowning and no foul play is suspected at this time.

It’s unclear how long Boatswain was underwater before being pulled out.
