Extension coming for Jason Kidd?

- by

As covered in our recent piece above about Irving’s first year-plus in Dallas, Kidd’s presence has been an unquestioned plus in the equation that has enabled Dončić and Irving to defy countless skeptics (yours truly included) and form one of the league’s most potent partnerships. An extension for Kidd before the final year of his current deal thus seems a natural.

If you’re Jason Kidd and the bracket is set after tonight, You might want to rest players. If so, he probably opts to rest Luka vs det, etc. and let Kyrie chase his million. So Kyrie might want to go for it tonight when he still has his best reinforcements – 3:53 PM

More on this storyline

“The real MVP, our MVP, (is) Luka,” Mavericks coach Jason Kidd said beforehand. “This is our campaign.” Dončić’s star teammate, Kyrie Irving, was even more impassioned with his exposition. “It was a statement. We all knew how special this year was going to be, and (when) I say we, I mean us in that locker room and organization, we knew,” Irving said. “He challenged his teammates, challenged me, and he (did) it in his own way. I think that’s the true sign of MVP: coming into the season and really initiating himself into that leadership role, doing it on both ends of the court. “His stats speak for themselves. He’s first in a lot of different categories. He’s held this team up when I wasn’t able to be in the lineup and I was injured. There are a lot of factors that I factor to his MVP case, and me as a brother of his, I have the utmost love and support to give him. I want to see him win MVP.” -via The Athletic / April 12, 2024
How would you evaluate the performance of Jason Kidd and his staff this season? Nico Harrison: “The coaches have done a great job. One, when you have two superstar players, first and foremost, getting those guys to play together at a high level and respect each other’s play and to play together, you always have to take a little bit off your game for the success of the team. To be able to do that is remarkable. Jason and his staff have done that at a high level. We’re not successful if that doesn’t happen.” -via Dallas Morning News / April 12, 2024
Q: Another aspect of that is you thought the trades would work. They have worked, but it’s not an automatic thing. It takes teams a while to find their way, and the biggest thing I’m seeing is the team has almost completely changed the way it plays, transforming from an offensive team that relied on 3-pointers to a defense-first team. Nico Harrison: “I think Jason and team have done a good job of really leaning into what our team is, how it’s built now. “I also give credit to Luka. He has empowered the new players. He’s gone out of his way to say, ‘Hey, when you get it, shoot it.’ I think it’s the coaches, but it’s also the players have embraced them and said, ‘No, go. We brought you in here to be yourself. You don’t have to play with your hands behind your back.’ … You get confidence when Kyrie and Luka are telling you to shoot the ball. And then you’ve got your coaches saying, ‘Hey, you’re open, you need to shoot it.’” -via Dallas Morning News / April 12, 2024
