National Diversity Coalition Celebrates Record Attendance at Its 21st Annual Economic Development Conference

The National Diversity Coalition (NDC) proudly announces the unprecedented success of its 21st Annual Economic Development Conference, "Unveiling the Future," which was held to a sold-out crowd at the prestigious Landmark venue in Mission Hills, California, on April 5, 2024. This year's conference not only set a new benchmark in attendance but also underscored the coalition's pivotal role in fostering economic empowerment and diversity within communities.

Under the theme "Unveiling the Future," the National Diversity Coalition, led by founder and CEO Faith Bautista Tamashiro, hosted its 21st Annual Economic Development Conference on April 5, 2024. The conference, known for promoting financial literacy, small business growth, housing, and supplier diversity, witnessed record attendance, demonstrating the community's robust interest and commitment to economic development and diversity. The event featured insightful workshops, engaging discussions, and a special awards ceremony, culminating in a celebratory dinner and gala.

The conference featured a series of engaging workshops focused on crucial topics such as Financial Literacy, Small Business and Housing, and Supplier Diversity. Attendees delved into discussions, gaining valuable insights and knowledge, while keynote speakers and panelists, including leaders from prominent financial institutions, corporations, and government agencies, shared their perspectives on fostering economic empowerment.

In a series of keynotes and panel discussions, speakers and attendees explored various facets of economic development, sharing insights and forging partnerships. The event was punctuated with high-profile testimonials, underscoring the collective drive toward inclusive economic progress:

  • Clint Stein, CEO of Umpqua Bank: "I was honored to represent Umpqua Bank as a speaker at the National Diversity Coalition's 21st Economic Development Conference. The attendees brought a tremendous amount of energy and engagement tothe event. We could have easily spent an additional hour in the Q&A portion of the fireside chat, the questions were that good and broad ranging. It is my hope that the participants came away from the conference knowing that Umpqua Bank is an engaged community partner that they can trust and rely on. Chris Merrywell, President of Consumer Banking at Umpqua Bank, and I both made multiple new connections that we intend to follow up on."
  • Brent Beardall, CEO of Washington Federal Bank: "Phenomenal opportunity to be with the leaders and prominent members of the National Diversity Coalition. We had open and honest conversations about what we as banks need to do to improve financial literacy, what non-profits can do to partner with banks in utilizing Community Reinvestment Act funds and learned from what some of the open-minded companies in California are doing to improve vendor diversity. Finally, we were able to come together in gratitude and understanding for both the blessings and challenges in life that come to all of us. I thoroughly enjoyed being with the NDC."
  • Claudette Fernandez, The Department of Housing and Urban Development: "The federal government cannot do it alone. Thanks, Faith Bautista and National Diversity Coalition for making dreams possible! Bringing government, non-profits, banking, and the private sector together to dialogue, unlock capital, and devise a plan for affordable housing and economic development will reduce the wealth gap and help generations. Being around diverse innovators, industry giants, and game-changers fills me with optimism for what's ahead!"
  • Victor Fakrogha, Community West Bank: "Attending the NDC workshop and gala was an enriching journey, filled with insightful panels representing diverse perspectives. The information shared was not only great but transformative, highlighting the importance of inclusivity. Amidst the thought-provoking discussions, the entertainment provided moments of joy and reflection, adding depth to the experience. The carefully curated food offerings catered to various palates, enhancing the sense of community around the dining table. However, what truly stood out was the warmth exuded by every attendee, fostering connections beyond superficial interactions. It was more than an event; it was a celebration of unity, knowledge, and genuine human connection."

One of the highlights of the evening was the presentation of the Bob Gnaizda Giraffe Award, named in honor of the late civil rights advocate. This year, the award recognized Jared Wolf of Banc of California for his outstanding contributions to diversity and inclusion. The award symbolizes courage, resilience, and commitment to social justice, reflecting the values at the heart of the NDC's mission.

The conference's success, highlighted by its sold-out status and the capacity crowd, underscores the community's dedication to advancing economic development and diversity. Faith Bautista Tamashiro and the NDC team received acclaim for organizing an impactful and memorable event, setting the stage for future initiatives.
