The St. Catherine’s High School baseball team earned its first Metro Classic Conference victory of the season in impressive fashion Tuesday.
Facing cross-town rival Lutheran-Prairie, the Angels overcame a slow start, built a five-run lead and held on late for an 11-9 victory at Horlick field.
The LPs jumped on the board first, building a 4-0 lead in the first two innings. St. Catherine’s (1-3, 1-3 MCC) responded, scoring five runs on seven hits in the bottom of the third to take a 7-4 lead.
Junior Marvid Sanchez hit a two-run single in the inning to help the rally.
The lead grew to five runs before Lutheran-Prairie (1-7, 1-3 MCC) started to rally. The LPs got within two runs, but the Angels were able to hang on with another late push. St. Catherine’s was able to take advantage of 10 walks and five errors from LP.

“It was a back-and-forth game that could have gone either way,” Lutheran-Prairie coach Jeff Wilson said. “They never gave up when they were down. Neither did we, and we almost managed to come back in the last inning, but it was too little, too late.”
Sanchez led the Angels, going 2 for 2 with three RBIs. Juniors Mariano Talamantez and Nathanyell Callis also had two hits for St. Catherine’s.
Senior Jayden Jaramillo went 2 for 2 with two doubles and four RBIs to lead the LPs. Senior Riley Gavigan added three hits and two RBIs.
“The good thing about baseball is that we’ll have another chance at them Thursday,” Wilson said. “And I think both teams are looking forward to it.”
CASE 9, KENOSHA BRADFORD 5: The Eagles won for the first time this season Tuesday, scoring in all four of their at-bats to beat the Red Devils in a rain-shortened Southeast Conference game at Case.
Case (1-4, 1-3 SEC) opened with one run in the bottom of the first inning, then added four in the bottom of the second. The Eagles got another run in the third and three more in the fourth. The game ended after five innings because of the weather.
Senior Nico Meltzer earned the pitching victory, throwing 3⅔ innings, allowing two hits, striking out five, walking six and allowing just one earned run. Junior Adam Contreras pitched the final 1⅓ innings, also allowing two hits.
Senior Joe Bline went 2 for 2 with a double and three RBIs, junior Michael Neimeyer went 2 for 3 with a double, junior Anthony Bull went 1 for 3 with two RBIs and junior Jacob Haughton didn’t have a hit, but walked twice, scored three runs and stole four bases.
Case scored more runs Tuesday than they had in their first four games combined (seven).
OAK CREEK 13-12, HORLICK 2-6: Monday, the Rebels lost both games of a Southeast Conference doubleheader at Oak Creek.
Oak Creek got ahead early in game one, which went only five innings. The Knights scored seven runs in the bottom of the third inning, while the Rebels split their runs between the second and fifth innings.
Senior infielder Cole Weisenbeck led the Rebels (0-7, 0-5 SEC), going 2 for 2 with a double, a run and an RBI. Senior second baseman Connor Blaeske and senior catcher Andrew Clemons split Horlick’s other two hits.
The Knights didn’t run away with it as easily in the second game of the doubleheader, spreading their runs across all seven innings. Oak Creek (6-0, 5-0) had 13 hits including two doubles, a triple and a home run.
The Rebels garnered eight hits with Blaeske, Clemons and senior third baseman/pitcher Dylan Hayek each getting two. Blaeske and Clemons both batted in runs and Weisenbeck had three RBIs, going 1 for 3 with a walk.
Vinny Vlach pitched game one for Horlick with one strikeout, five walks and 11 hits. Cam Gulotta pitched 4⅔ innings of game two, striking out two, walking four and allowing 10 hits. Hayek pitched the other 2⅓ innings and struck out two.

SOUTHERN LAKES CONFERENCE MAJOR MEET NO. 2: Waterford won its second straight Southern Lakes Conference Major Meet of the season as Wolverines golfers took three of the top four spots Tuesday at Krueger-Haskell Golf Club in Beloit.
Waterford junior Jackson Heath and Elkhorn junior Evan Adler tied for first at 4-over-par 74, but Heath had a birdie on the 18th hole to post a better back-nine score (36 to 37 for Adler) to win the first WIAA tiebreaker and earn medalist honors.
Heath’s junior teammate, Robbie Meyers, was third with a 78 and Wolverines senior Adam Chart recovered from a 44 on the front nine to shoot an even-par 35 on the back nine, which included three birdies, and finished fourth at 79.
Senior Matt Catapano rounded out Waterford’s top four with an 86.
The Wolverines totaled 317 to beat runner-up Westosha Central (336) by 19 shots.
Union Grove finished fifth at 368, led by junior Caden Eichner with an 86. Sophomore Cody Nelson shot an 87 and junior Caleb Westrum added a 91.
Burlington was seventh at 412, led by senior Jonathan Cowan with a 98.
MIDWEST CLASSIC CONFERENCE MINI-MEET: Catholic Central seniors Omri Moynihan and Alan Howell shot 49 and 57, respectively, in a Midwest Classic Conference mini-meet Tuesday at the Fairways of Woodside in Sussex.
The Hilltoppers had an incomplete team.
University School of Milwaukee and Lake Country Lutheran tied for first at 154.

PRAIRIE 5, SAINT THOMAS MORE 2: The Hawks had a strong showing in their Metro Classic Conference dual meet Tuesday at Wind Point.
Starting early to get all matches in before rain hit, Prairie took three of the four singles flights and two of the three doubles flights.
Junior No. 1 singles player Jonathan Orth had an impressive showing, defeating Payton Adams 6-0, 6-0. At No. 2 singles, Benjamin Menzhuber won 6-2, 6-3, and Brayden Comaris won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4 singles.
“Jon Orth played some really patient singles and ran some great patterns in his victory,” Prairie coach Nich Schafer said. “It was nice to see the rest of the singles and doubles players playing and working on what we’ve been doing in practice.”
At No. 2 doubles, Parker Kohl and James Fellner won 6-0, 6-0 and at No. 3 doubles, Arthur Rossi and Michael Babu won 6-4, 6-0.
