Killeen father shoots, kills 26-year-old son during argument, affidavit reveals

According to police, the father's bond is currently set at $150,000.

KILLEEN, Texas — The Killeen Police Department arrested 53-year-old Larry Lamont Hawkins for reportedly shooting and killing his 26-year-old son Deante Treshawn Hawkins on Saturday, March 23.

According to an arrest affidavit, officers were called to the 3500 block of Rusack Drive in response to a shooting around 7:53 p.m. Upon arrival, officers says they found a woman holding towels on Deante Hawkins chest as he was suffering from a gunshot wound.

Despite officers taking life-saving measures, Deante Hawkins was pronounced dead at 8:38 p.m.

Police say officers then talked to the woman, who was identified as Genesis Jones and Deante Hawkins' girlfriend, and she told them that they were at the house of Deante's father, Larry Hawkins.

According to the affidavit, Deante Hawkins and his father, Larry Hawkins, had gotten into an argument downstairs at the home while Jones remained upstairs, recording their interaction with each other.

The affidavit says Larry Hawkins was upset about his son, Deante Hawkins, owing him money. Jones then reportedly heard a loud gunshot and then another one not long after.

Upon going downstairs, Jones found her boyfriend, Deante Hawkins, shot in the chest.

Police say officers recovered a gun on the scene and say Larry Hawkins claimed that his son attacked him, so he shot him in self defense. However, Larry Hawkins showed no signs of having been in a physical attack, the affidavit says

Larry Hawkins was then arrested and taken to the Killeen City Jail.

The Robbery-Homicide Unit presented this case to the Bell County District Attorney's Office, which resulted in Larry Hawkins arraignment. According to police, his bond is currently set at $150,000.
