The Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle has been accused of leaving the Royal Family after 'she wanted to be the star' according to a royal expert.

The former Suits actress married into the Royal Family in May 2018 when she wed Prince Harry, yet the couple stepped back from royal duties in 2020. After their exit, Meghan and Harry have since made explosive and controversial comments during interviews and their Netflix series about their experience in The Firm.

Now a royal expert has suggested that she "picked up her toys" and left the royal family when she wasn't made the centre of attention and hadn't realised that she and Harry were lower down in the 'royal pecking order'.

Former royal correspondent Charles Rae told The Sun's Royal Exclusive show : "I don't believe that she she understood the pecking order of the royal family. You've got the monarch, you've got the Prince of Wales and then you've got everyone else under that she wanted to be the star and that I think it was that simple that she thought she just picked up her toys and decided to go off to America."

The comments come as it's been claimed that whilst Prince Harry is said to be keen to mend the royal rift and repair his relationship with his family and potentially return to the UK, yet Meghan will be the ultimate decider. Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams has explained that the former Suits actress will ultimately 'have the final say' as he told The Sun : "If Meghan didn't want to come she could never be forced to. It would be extremely unlikely Harry would come over with the kids without Meghan."

Prince Harry will visit the UK next month to celebrate 10 years of the Invictus Games in May, and it's likely that Meghan will not accompany him. An expert has revealed the former Suits actress is unlikely to visit the UK due to fears over safety and the 'drama' that would likely unfold with the Royal Family.

Meghan has made a return to the UK since the pair stepped back from their royal duties in 2020 but only on rare occasions which included Queen Elizabeth II's funeral in 2022. However, she did not return for King Charles III’s coronation last year, which Harry attended alone.
