WOODBRIDGE, Va. (DC News Now) — The Prince William County Police Department (PWCPD) said that officers charged a 21-year-old man who moved out of his Woodbridge apartment building and left several animals behind, some of which died.

PWCPD said that its Animal Control Officers started their investigation after a report on Jan. 25. The report referenced the Riverside Station Apartments in the 14000 block of Big Crest Ln.

Officers found that Paul Michael Balletto had left behind animals after moving out of his apartment and to New Hampshire. PWCPD said that he had moved out the day before officers responded.

In an email to DC News Now, a PWCPD spokesperson said that there were “3 dogs, 1 cat, an alligator hatchling, iguanas, a gecko and a bunch of snakes including pythons and boa constrictors.”

Animal Control Officers said that some animals were dead when they arrived, while others had survived. PWCPD said that the living animals were “treated and are expected to survive.”

Based on the status of the rescued animals and analysis of the dead ones, officials believe that “the animals had not received proper care for an extended amount of time.”

Balletto was charged with five counts of animal cruelty and five counts of animal abandonment. He was released on a court summons.
