Greta Thunberg Detained Twice In One Day For Blocking Traffic At Climate Protest ‘We Are In A Planetary Emergency!’

Climate activist Greta Thunberg was detained twice by police in the Netherlands on Saturday for several hours at a protest.

Thunberg, along with other climate protesters, was held by police in The Hague, Netherlands for blocking a major highway into the city. The 21-year-old Swedish environmentalist has been advocating for policies combating climate change since she was a young teenager.

Following her release, Thunberg resumed protesting with a small group of activists at a different road that led into a railway station, according to Reuters. Police then detained Thunberg for a second time before taking her away in a police van.

Footage captured of the event shows Thunberg being dragged by police from the middle of the road as nearly a dozen other protesters try to block incoming traffic.

As police were dragging her away, Thunberg told news reporters that her protest was meant to bring awareness to the world’s existential climate crisis.

“We are in a planetary emergency and we are not going to stand by and let people lose their lives and livelihood and be forced to become climate refugees when we can do something,” she noted.

For months, activists have reportedly been blocking the road that Thunberg was detained at on Saturday, demanding governments from around the world end subsides for fossil fuels.

Per Reuters, police reportedly 412 protesters for participating in the event; however, it is not clear if they will face any legal consequences.
