(KRON) – One person carrying an unregistered firearm was arrested after running from police, according to the Santa Rosa Police Department.

The Santa Rosa Police Department’s Special Enforcement Team conducted a security check in the back of multiple businesses in the 3400 block of Cleveland Avenue around 5:57 p.m. on Wednesday.

Police said officers located several subjects in vehicles smoking marijuana, which is illegal. As the officers approached the vehicle, one person dashed out of the car and headed south. One of the officers chased the subject. The subject was detained after he tripped and fell.

The suspect informed officers that he had a handgun in his waistband.

The subject was identified as 26-year-old Santa Rosa resident Alejandro Mejia. The loaded 9mm handgun was not registered to Mejia.

Mejia was arrested and booked into the Sonoma County Main Adult Detention Facility for possession of a loaded handgun not registered, possession of a concealed handgun in a vehicle and resisting arrest.
