Phoenix Neighborhood Evacuated, Roads Reopen After Gas Leak Caused by Multi-Car CrashSource: Google Street View

Chaos ensued in a North Phoenix neighborhood after a multi-car collision led to a gas leak, prompting evacuations and road closures on Monday morning. According to Arizona's Family, a blue pickup truck hit a gas line near 27th and Northern avenues after the crash, which occurred around 10:20 a.m. The Phoenix Fire Department said they transported two people involved in the crash to the hospital in stable condition.

Firefighters from Phoenix and Glendale, alongside Southwest Gas, worked diligently to mitigate the leak. Evacuations spanned businesses and an local school, with video footage showing students from Washington Elementary School being evacuated on a bus.  The district informed parents and made arrangements for family reunifications. “All students and staff are being evacuated to Palo Verde Middle School, 7502 N. 39th Avenue.  Parents are being notified and reunification plans are being activated for families to pick up their students, if they choose,”  the school district officials said in a statement obtained by Arizona's Family.

The roads, initially closed for several hours, were reopened around 4 p.m. Phoenix Fire Capt. Shaun Dubois underscored the challenges in handling the incident due to the high pressure of the damaged gas line. "This is a high-pressure gas line. So it does require some diligence, some time and effort to shut this off safely," Dubois explained in an interview with Arizona's Family.

Specialists metered buildings within a quarter mile radius from the leak to ensure the safety, with favorable readings supporting the no immediate danger to residents. "This gas generally doesn’t sink; it rises. It should be naturally venting in the air, there shouldn’t be any concerns. It’s not a super windy day so theres really no hazards to the community in the area," Capt. Dubois added. The eventual shutdown of the gas line was confirmed by Southwest Gas through a statement. "Southwest Gas crews have responded to an incident that damaged the Company’s natural gas infrastructure at 27th and Northern Avenue in Phoenix. Ensuring the area is safe is our top priority, and our crews are coordinating with fire officials to secure the scene. Currently, gas is off, and we do not expect any impacts to service. Our customers can continue to safely rely on their natural gas service. We appreciate the swift response of first responders," Southwest Gas said, in a message sent to Arizona's Family.

"Fire officials say Phoenix Police will be investigating the crash," as mentioned by Fox10 Phoenix.
