STAMULLEN

Road surface water

I noticed over the past number of weeks while out walking along the smaller rural roads that the majority of the `water-cuttings`, which are supposed to allow the surface water running along the roads to flow into the streams that run alongside the hedgerows at the sides of the road, are clogged with weeds and overgrowth. So, as a direct result of this, the surface water has nowhere to flow except down the road. County Council Maintenance Employees in the past used to help keep all of these water cuttings open and free of obstruction and the only tools that they needed was a shovel which cleaned back the vegetation allowing the surface water to flow into the roadside cuttings and into the smaller streams, then a quick clean-up with a yard-brush and so move on to the next water-cutting and so on. In recent years I also have noticed that there are no County Council workers to be seen along any road, but that, from time to time, a man in a huge mechanical digger will be seen removing the overgrowth blocking the water-cuttings by using the bucket of his machine and thus creating a dirty mess with mud left all over the roads. Since last summer we have had a frightening amount of rainfall and many of the smaller rural roads resemble that of a stream in itself with water gushing down the road following heavy or prolonged spells of rain. The roads in themselves are also falling into a state of bad repair as a result of so much surface water running across them. Bring back the local County Council Employee who was a very familiar sight along these smaller roads in the not-to-distant past; for they cannot be any more expensive than the services of a man in a mechanical digger!

Voting Register

Over the next 5 or 6 weeks or so, you will see the posters going up on the poles and the doors getting knocked etc. etc. in preparation for the forthcoming Local Elections. Make sure your name is recorded on the local Voting Register otherwise there is no point in complaining about `changes`; if you are Not on the Register then you will Not have a vote, simple as that.
