A man has died after reports of an ‘altercation’ in London with an urgent investigation into what happened.

The man, in his fifties, was found unresponsive by police who were called at around 2.26pm on Friday to a house in Streatham.

He was taken to hospital in a critical condition but could not be saved.

A 38-year-old man was arrested at the scene in Fernwood Avenue and has since been bailed pending further enquiries.

Police believe they know his identity but are still trying to find out who his next of kin are and locate them.

A crime scene remains in place outside the street in south London.

DCI Laura Nelson said: ‘I know that local people will be shocked and upset by this incident. I share their concerns and assure them that my colleagues and I are doing all we can to establish what led to this tragic death.

‘At this early stage, I must retain an open mind.

‘A post-mortem examination will be held in due course, and this, along with other lines of enquiry will help to establish exactly what happened.’
