Shardlake, the upcoming Disney+ series starring Game of Thrones actor Sean Bean, has landed a release date.

It's been confirmed that all four episodes of the murder-mystery drama, based on the popular novels by CJ Sansom, will be available to watch on the streaming platform from May 1.

The series stars Arthur Hughes as Matthew Shardlake, a lawyer whose sheltered life is turned upside down when Henry VII’s right-hand man Thomas Cromwell (played by Bean) orders him to investigate the murder of one of his commissioners.

The commissioner had been gathering evidence to close a monastery in the remote town of Scarnsea, making it imperative for Cromwell's political survival that Shardlake solves the murder and ensures the monastery's closure.

By Cromwell's orders, Shardlake and Jack Barak (played by Anthony Boyle) head to Scarnsea, where they're both met with a lot of hostility and paranoia by the monks who are worried about what's going on.

Other cast members on the series include Babou Ceesay, Paul Kaye, Ruby Ashbourne Serkis, Peter Firth, Matthew Steer, Brian Vernel, Irfan Shamji, David Pearse, Miles Barrow, Mike Noble, and Kimberley Nixon.

All four episodes of Shardlake are directed by Justin Chadwick, whose work includes other period drama's such as The Other Boleyn Girl and Tulip Fever, while Stephen Butchard wrote the script.

"Although these stories are set in Tudor England, the themes absolutely engage and resonate with today’s world," Butchard said of the show's announcement while speaking last year.

"Hundreds of years may have past — but humankind and what makes us tick has changed little," he added.

Shardlake will be available to watch on Disney+ from May 1.
