GURTEEN

Recent death

The death took place on March 27 at Sligo University Hospital of Patrick (Paddy) Harte, Ballymote and formerly of Shraugh, Cloonloo. Predeceased by his parents James and Bridget he will be sadly missed by all who knew him. His remains reposed at Perry’s Funeral Home, Ballymote on Monday evening and after Mass of the Resurrection in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Ballymote on Tuesday burial took place at Knockbrack Cemetery, Sincere sympathy to his brother Eddie, nieces Edel and Jenny and nephew John, grandnieces, neighbours and friends. May he rest in Peace.

RECENT DEATH

The death tragic took place on March 26 following a house fire in Swinford of Thomas and Eileen Mahon, Eileen a native of Castlerea and Thomas was formerly of Ballaghaderreen. He was predeceased by his parents Thomas and Marion and is survived by his daughters and grandchildren, brothers and sisters extended family and many friends. He was cousin of the Phillips family, Cuilmore, Gurteen. The Funeral ceremony took place on Wednesday morning in Swinford followed by a private cremation. May their souls rest in Peace.

RECENT DEATH

The death took place on March 27 at Fern Dean Nursing Home, Blackrock of Teresa McNern née Flannery, Bray Co. Wicklow and formerly of Gurteen Co. Sligo. Her Father was a garda Sergeant in Gurteen many years ago and Teresa attended Carn NS, Sincere sympathy to all her relations and many friends. May she rest in Peace.

DARTRY BAND IN CONCERT

The Dartry céilí Band will perform a live concert in the Coleman Music Centre, Gurteen, Co.Sligo on Saturday, April 13 at 8 p.m. Early booking is advisable for this concert. Tickets on sale now. Call 071 9182599 or visit colemanirishmusic.com. The Dartry céilí Band won the all-Ireland Senior céilí Band competition in 2009, at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in Tullamore. The 11-piece band features band leader Philip Duffy fiddle), Mossie Martin, John Kilkenny, Declan Folan (on fiddles), June McCormack, Noelle Carroll and Cian Kearins (on flutes), Seán Carroll (Button Accordion), Michael Rooney (Concertina), Kevin Brehony (Piano), Damien McGuinness (Drums), with singers Noelle Carroll and Cian Kearins. It promises to be a great night’s entertainment.

RECENT BIRTH

Congratulations to Caroline and Kieran O’Dowd, Clonsilla, Gurteen on the recent birth of a baby boy Eamon – brother to Mary.

SLIGO ROSE

Congratulations and good wishes to Megan McCormack, Cloonloo, who was selected as the Sligo Rose for the Rose of Tralee competition from an entry of 13 contestants last Friday evening at the Clayton Hotel Sligo.

EASTERN HARPS 50/50

Eastern Harps 50/50 draw on April 1 had a jackpot of €818 – and the winner was Myles Craig, Ballinafad. Winners of the Easter hampers were Aileen Henry, Keash, Michael Moran and Gracie McGill Monasteraden. The club is very appreciative of all the support throughout the year.

BINGO

Gurteen bingo is on each Friday night at 8 p.m. The jackpot of €4,400 was won on Friday night, March 29, and it restarted again at €1,500 on forty five calls – lotto raffle is €700. GURTEEN CELTIC

The Gurteen Celtic lotto draw last week was not won – numbers drawn were 3, 4, 14 and 15. Winner of the €50 was Darren Taylor, Lisballeely, Gurteen. The jackpot is now €3,100 and the draw for April 7 will be taking place in Donegan’s Ragwood.

DEFIBRILLATOR COLLECTION

There will be a Defibrillator Churchgate collection on Sunday, April 14, towards the upkeep and maintenance of defibrillators in the Gurteen area. All support would be greatly appreciated.

MANOR-HAMILTON

GAA Silver Jubilees

Twenty-five years ago the Glencar Manor GAA Club achieved a remarkable level of success at county and national level. The silver jubilees of these landmark achievements occur this year.

In 1999 Glencar Manor won their second Leitrim senior football championship title plus the Leitrim Junior A & C football championship titles and the all-Ireland Scór senior figure dance title in the Ulster Hall, Belfast on April 24.

On Sunday, September 5, 1999, Glencar Manor narrowly defeated Fenagh on a score line of one – eight to one – seven in an exciting Leitrim SFC final played in Páirc Seán MacDiarmada thanks to a late James Kelly goal.

Making A Will

The North Connacht and Ulster Citizens Information Service Leitrim will host a free ‘Making a Will’ talk and presentation event on Monday night, April 15, at 7 p.m. in the Landmark Hotel Carrick-on-Shannon.

This presentation will be delivered by Cascade Training Consultancy’s Justice Media award-winning journalist and legal trainer, Anne O’Carroll BCL, MA the topics that Ms O’Carroll will cover are: How to make a Will, What happens if you don’t make a Will, Providing for children and vulnerable relatives, How to reduce tax, Taking out probate and other related topics. This free event is funded and supported by the Citizens Information Board.

Give Blood Invitation

The Irish Blood Transfusion Service, which will have its mobile unit at the Bee Park Community Centre on Monday, April 15, from 4.45 p.m. to 8 p.m., invites you to give blood.

Regarding the importance of donating blood the Irish Blood Transfusion Service says “one in four of us will need a blood transfusion in our lifetime and one blood donation can save three lives.”

Adult Educational Guidance

The Leitrim Adult Educational Guidance Service is a free, confidential and impartial service that supports you to explore your education, training or career options.

This service is for adults, or 16- to 18-year-olds who are not currently in full-time education and are considering returning to or continuing with education. You may have no idea what you would like to do and need some direction.

Table quiz

Manorhamilton Chamber is promoting a table quiz in Gurns Milestone Lounge on Friday night, April 19, at 9 p.m.

Everyone is invited to participate in the Manorhamilton Chamber table quiz. It promises to be a fun event for all participating teams, as well as for all the members of each team involved. All the contestants will endeavour to answer questions from their personal general knowledge store in tandem with that of their team members on many subjects including topical ones.

SAFETY MATTERS.

All Patrons of Merville Community Centre are asked to exercise caution when driving in the area when on Drop Off and Pick Up, as these times can be extremely busy both at the centre and in the locality. Best Practice would be to Drop Off and Pick up outside the centre where possible. Be especially aware of pedestrians crossing at the centre entrance and exit. Think safe.

PENDANT ALARMS.

Merville Community Centre facilitate on behalf of our community the provision to eligible persons of Social Monitored Pendant Alarms, under the Seniors Alert Scheme that is administered by Pobal.

Equipment funding is available for eligible persons over 65 years for the installation of an monitored alarm on a landline in the person’s home. The alarms are now available for persons aged 65 or older and living alone, living with another person who meets the terms and conditions, living alone for significant periods of time during the day, or is a carer to someone else in their household.

First year monitoring is free for all new applicants. Subsequent annual monitoring charges are then payable by the user. Other Systems are available at various costs for those who do not posses a Landline. Overall this monitoring product adds peace of mind for both the users, family and friends.

Community Games Competitions

Community Games Art competition will take place on Friday, April 12, at 6 p.m. in Ardkeeran NS. Handwriting and Model-making will take place on Sunday, April 14, at 1 p.m. in Sooey NS Athletics will take place on Sunday, May 26, in Riverstown Community Park. PARK FUNDRAISING

Riverstown Community Park is a wonderful amenity to have in the area. Last April, lights were added making it safe for use in the winter months. There are ongoing costs associated with the park such as insurance, water charges, electricity, refuse collection and general maintenance. Thank you to local groups Shamrock Gaels, Arrow Harps, Community Games and the Agricultural Show for their yearly contribution to running costs. However, there is always a shortfall. This is an appeal to walkers who use the park on a regular basis to consider becoming a friend of Riverstown Community Park for as little as €5 a month to help ensure this excellent amenity will be maintained into the future. APRIL CONCERT

Riverstown Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann presents Ryan Sheridan, Conor McDonagh, Sinéad Johnston and Conor Connolly in concert on Saturday, April 20, in the Morrison Cottage, Riverstown at 8.30 p.m. Admission is €15 on the door and refreshments will be served. April Social Dances

The April 1 Social Dance in the community centre Skreen will take place Saturday, April 13, with music by Pat Mulchrone. The April 2 Social Dance will take place on Saturday, April 27, with music by John Molloy. Dancing starts at 10 p.m.

First Communion Children

All First Communion Children and their parents are invited to be present at the Do This in Memory Mass in Skreen Church on Sunday, April 28, at 11.30 a.m. The First Communion Children will celebrate the Sacrament of First Reconciliation in Skreen Church on Monday, April 29, at 7 p.m. and will celebrate their First Communion in Skreen Church on Saturday, May 11, at 11.30 a.m. Mass.

Beltra Country Market is now open every Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. with a variety of home produce and crafts available. A warm welcome is assured in the Tea Room. New members welcome – bakers, vegetable and flower growers and crafters. The group can be followed on their Facebook page.

West Sligo Singers.

The West Sligo Singers welcome new members to join their group – all who enjoy singing. The singers meet every Tuesday night at 7 p.m. in the Old School House Skreen and everyone is invited to their singing group.

Dementia Inclusive Social Club

The Dementia Inclusive Social Club meet in the Skreen-Dromard Community Centre on every second Wednesday from 2.30 p.m. to 4.30 p.m.

It is a free club and is open to anyone looking for a calm, supportive environment, for relaxed tea and chat. The club is a social gathering where people can access information and support and meet other people as well as exchange ideas and experiences. Everyone welcome. Skreen Barracks is now manned every Tuesday, with the opening hours of 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Office AdministratorAn Office Administrator is required for the Skreen-Dromard Community Centre. Templeboy Foróige Club meet every Friday evening in the Old School House Templeboy. Fifth and sixth class time is 7 p.m. and for 12-year-olds and over, first year students to 17 year olds from 8 p.m.

The annual Parish Clean-Up organised by St Patrick’s GAA Club took place on Good Friday. The club wish to thank everyone who helped with the event.
