The release said on April 3, deputies were called to Hanks Road and Highway 99 for a report of a disabled vehicle. When they arrived, they found 47-year-old Robert Timothy Long, of Pace, who had been driving an RV when it ran off the road.

Long allegedly told deputies his 80-year-old mother was inside the RV and couldn’t get out. He also told deputies there were two dogs in the RV with his mother who “were aggressive and would attack if they felt threatened,” according to the release.

Deputies then allegedly asked Long to remove the dogs from the RV and to keep them on leashes so that deputies and ECFR members could remove his mother.

The release said Long took the dogs out of the RV and took them to the side, where he removed their leashes.

That’s when one of the ECFR members approached the RV. At that time, one of the dogs allegedly ran to the member and attacked him from behind, knocking him over and biting him.

An ECSO deputy then shot the dog one time, causing the dog to later die from its injuries, according to the release.

The release said Escambia County Animal Control was called to the scene due to the dogs’ known aggression. Long was allegedly told multiple times to put the second dog on a leash and to put him somewhere so deputies could talk to him.

Long refused to let go of the dog and held the dog tightly between him and deputies, causing the dog to whine in pain, according to the release.

The release said because of the aggressive dog and Long not complying, he was tased and detained.

Long was arrested and charged with resisting an officer without violence, hindering the duties of a law enforcement officer, and reckless disregard by a dog owner.
