NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — As the addiction crisis continues, the nationally-recognized alcohol and drug treatment center Cumberland Heights is expanding its reach to help treat more patients fighting substance abuse.

Cumberland Heights broke ground on its new Men’s Residential and Therapeutic Facility River Road Campus Wednesday.

The treatment center will be located on River Road near Cumberland Heights’ main campus in Nashville. The new facility will include 20 patient rooms—which is enough space to house 40 patients—in addition to common spaces, lounge areas, group and individual therapy rooms, and exercise space.

Experts say the treatment facility is needed now more than ever. According to the Metro Public Health Department, 523 people died of an overdose in Davidson County during the first three quarters of 2023.

Cumberland Heights has treated 93,000 patients with alcohol and drug addictions since it opened in 1966, according to the co-founder’s son, Rob Crichton.

“We often think about patients, and that sounds so clinical. We do call them patients, but our patients are somebody’s family members. They’re our fathers, our mothers, are sisters, our brothers, our children, so they deserve a living space that provides them dignity and respect and creates really the container where recovery can take root on this campus,” Cumberland Heights CEO Jay Crosson said.

Cumberland Heights officials hope to open the new facility some time in 2025.
