Gophers Set to Face Michigan State, No. 2 Michigan in Final Home Matches

MINNEAPOLIS - This weekend, the University of Minnesota tennis program will play its final two home matches of the season. On Friday, Apr. 12, the Gophers will host Michigan State at 3:30 p.m. CT. Then, on Sunday, Apr. 14, Minnesota takes on No. 2 Michigan at 11:00 a.m. CT.
 
The Season So Far
Minnesota holds a 3-4 Big Ten conference record and a 10-9 overall record.
 
Last weekend, the Gophers took on then-No. 32 Illinois and No. 37 Northwestern. Minnesota went 0-2 on the weekend, falling to the Fighting Illini in a 4-0 match and to the Wildcats in a 7-0 match.
 
Gopher Team Leaders
Gopher sophomore Aiva Schmitz leads the team with 14 singles wins this season. She earned Big Ten Player of the Week on Mar. 13 for her performances against Indiana and Purdue, and has clinched the winning point in all three of Minnesota's conference victories.
 
Sophomore Sofia Pizzoni leads the team with 8 doubles wins with various partners. She and partner Sofia Pinto have notched a team-high of 5 wins as a doubles pair.
 
The Competition
Michigan State has a 10-11 overall record and is 1-6 against Big Ten conference opponents. The Spartans are coming off a 6-1 loss against No. 2 Michigan on April 6. Freshman Rita Bhakta is currently ranked No. 92 in the ITA national singles rankings. Doubles pair Nicole Conard and Ayshe Can are No. 34 in the ITA national doubles rankings.
 
Michigan is 19-3 overall and 7-0 in conference play, coming off a 6-1 win against Michigan State. The Wolverines sit atop the Big Ten conference rankings and have been ranked No. 2 in the ITA national team rankings since March 5. They roster six players in the top 110 ITA singles rankings, with senior Kari Miller voted as high as the No. 3 singles player nationally. Miller is also part of the No. 6 ITA-ranked doubles pair with partner Jaedan Brown. Brown herself has an ITA singles ranking of 110.
