An awesome lineup of world-class bluegrass musicians will come together for a free concert at 7 p.m. Friday, April 19, at Haywood Community College as part of the Carolina Heritage Weekend. The lineup features Darren Nicholson, Shawn Lane, Aubrey Haynie, Ron Stewart and Aaron Ramsey.
“The opportunity to hear this particular lineup of extremely talented guys playing together is a special occasion,” said Beth Gilmore, Downtown Waynesville Commission executive director. “They are coming together for one extraordinary night of music, and it’s free.”
This is the first time the five musicians have performed all together.
“I don’t consider myself an All-Star, but I consider these other musicians legendary within the genre. So I hopped at the chance to be a part of it,” Nicholson quipped. “These guys are as good as you will ever hear anywhere.”
The show was first conceived as staring Lane and Nicholson — Haywood’s famed mandolin player formerly of Balsam Range. But it snowballed as they recruited other musicians, who were excited about the opportunity to play together and coming to the mountains of Western North Carolina.
Nicholson said he’s honored to be a part of the whole weekend and particularly this show, calling the free concert a win-win.
“What a gift,” he said. “I think the biggest winners are the music fans in Haywood County and Western North Carolina. This will be a memory night. Thank you to Haywood County and the Carolina Heritage Weekend.”
Nicolson is a multi-talented musician, a GRAMMY nominee, winner of 13 International Bluegrass Music Association awards and Canton resident. He has taken his own brand of mountain music around the world. A regular for years on the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Tennessee, and a founding member of acclaimed bluegrass group Balsam Range, Nicholson now spends his time recording, writing new songs and performing.
