Portland's Police Bureau has a new yet familiar face at the helm—Bob Day. Appointed last year as interim chief, Day has now been given the reins permanently by Mayor Ted Wheeler. The announcement came this past Wednesday, marking a significant leadership decision for the city's law enforcement amidst ongoing discussions about policing practices and community relations.

Having served in an interim capacity since October 10, 2023, Day has reportedly met, and perhaps even surpassed, Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler's expectations. Previously retired, the seasoned law enforcement officer stepped out of retirement and into the temporary role after former Chief Chuck Lovell transitioned into a community-focused position. Day's appointment is set to provide the bureau the leadership that Mayor Wheeler believes is crucial during this time of reform and restructuring.

"Chief Day has more than met my expectations when I appointed him as Interim Chief only a few short months ago. He has proven the value of his diverse experience, his commitment to finding public safety solutions that serve the community and the membership of the Bureau, and a level of positivity that our city needs right now," said Mayor Wheeler in a statement.

Day, having joined the ranks of the Portland Police Bureau in 1990, has worn numerous hats throughout his career including leading the Training Division, Operations Branch, and serving as Deputy Chief of Police until his brief retirement in 2019. His appointment as the permanent chief was lauded by the mayor, who emphasized Day's innovative methodologies aimed at crime reduction and his role in spearheading crucial discussions around issues of race and public welfare within the criminal justice system. Day, who became the Interim Chief on October 10, pledges to remain steadfast in his vision and objectives for the bureau.
