Union Scotties

The Union High baseball team held on for a win Saturday afternoon.

Jalen Peace and Rocco Galmarini combined to allow just two hits to Shenango in leading the Scotties to a 5-4 WPIAL nonsection win at Butler’s Pullman Park.

Union (3-0) led 5-1 going to the bottom of the seventh before the Wildcats tallied three markers to close within a run.

Peace (1-0) started and worked three innings to pick up the win. He surrendered no hits and one run — earned — with four walks and three strikeouts.

Galmarini pitched four innings in relief to capture the save. He gave up two hits and three runs — one earned — with two walks and five strikeouts.

The Scotties notched eight total hits. Dennen Bowen recorded three hits for Union and Landon Eckert added a pair. Eckert drove in two runs as well.

Jimmy Roe took the loss in relief. Roe tossed one inning, allowing four hits and four runs — all earned — with a walk and two strikeouts.

The Scotties scored a run in the first and four in the third.

Shenango (3-2) scored its other run in the third.

Union is back in action at 2 p.m. Thursday for a home doubleheader against Western Beaver. Shenango entertains Riverside at 4 p.m. Monday.

Avonworth 16,

Mohawk 5

The Antelopes scored nine runs in the top of the first and cruised to a nonsection win over the Warriors. The game was played at Pullman Park.

The game was stopped after five innings because of the mercy rule.

Mohawk (5-1) registered seven hits, led by Jay Wrona with three. A.J. Verdi drove in two runs for the Warriors.

Aidan Bowser (0-1) started and took the loss. Bowser did not record an out, facing five batters. He gave up one hit and five runs — all earned — with three walks.

Avonworth (4-3) added four runs in the third, two in the fourth and one in the fifth.

Mohawk plated two tallies in the first and three in the second.

The Warriors host Wilmington at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Softball

South Fayette 13,

New Castle 5

The Lady Lions broke the game open with six runs in the top of the seventh in a WPIAL Section 3-5A win over the host Lady ‘Canes.

Gabby Mangieri posted three of New Castle’s eight hits. Keara Mangieri was next with a pair. Keara Mangieri also drove in two runs for the Lady ‘Canes (0-1, 1-1).

Gabby Mangieri notched a triple for the hosts.

Olivia Hood went the distance in taking the loss. Hood gave up 10 hits and 13 runs — eight earned — with no walks and nine strikeouts.

There were 12 errors in the game, seven of which by New Castle.

South Fayette scored a run in the first, four in the second, one in the fourth, one in the fifth and six more in the seventh.

New Castle collected a run in the first, one in the third, two in the fifth and one in the seventh.

The Lady ‘Canes will host West Allegheny at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
