High on Fire have unveiled the video for “Cometh the Storm,” the title track from their new album arriving next Friday (April 19th).

The six-minute track opens with a subdued intro that’s guided by bassist/guitarist Jeff Matz. Much like the calm before the storm in question, Matz’s phrases slowly lead the arrangement to a bombastic chorus, as Coady Willis’ drumming picks up and the bellows of frontman Matt Pike assume a towering presence.

The confection of Matz and Pike’s thick, bass-y guitar tones are at the crux of these massive drops and dynamic peaks, which culminate in a satiating, late-track sludge breakdown. And it was Matz who broke ground on the composition of the song while noodling on his bass in the practice room.

“‘Cometh the Storm’ was built from a riff I started playing on bass at practice,” said Matz in a press release. “I was noodling around with this melancholic harmonic minor line, just hammering the notes with my left hand, when Matt yelled out, ‘Are we recording this!?'”

Regarding the huge chorus, Matz added: “The chorus riff was something Coady and I came up with when we were jamming in L.A. Matt then came in and worked up some rough lyrics and came up with the vocal line. For the chorus, I used this fretless bass I’d acquired. The weight of the low frequencies this thing produced was insane — how it blended with the guitars and drums, it was like being hit with a sledgehammer. We knew right away that this was going to be an epically heavy track.”

The video fantastically depicts the song, as High on Fire perform in a faux soundstage storm (it’s campy enough and looks awesome) while stylized medieval fight scenes take place. So, basically the perfect heavy metal video — very Dio — and with a modern twist ending.

“This was the first time I got to work with the guys on set and we had a blast,” said director Phil Mucci. “High on Fire lyrics can always be interpreted in a number of ways, so I started by trying to define ‘The Storm.’A huge list of visual ideas got whittled down to the two essential characters at work, The Man and Gaia, representing duel ends of the spectrum — with a very destructive cross-over. I always try to keep things light and encourage everyone to come with ideas — like Coady’s burning cymbal idea! No better way to end your High on Fire shoot than with exploding cymbals!”

High on Fire will be supporting the new album with a 12-date US tour that launches early next month (get tickets here).
