Schools in a number of Macomb County communities were considering closing on Monday after receiving bomb threats over the weekend, authorities said Sunday night.

The threatening calls were to school officials in Armada, Chesterfield Township, Clinton Township and New Haven. Anchor Bay School District in Casco Township and Merritt Academy in New Haven were among the schools to receive the threats, investigators said.

Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham said “multiple” threats of an explosive device were made over the weekend to schools or districts mostly on the northeast side of the county.

“At this point, we are investigating but officials in the various schools have been kept up to speed,” the sheriff said.

Wickersham acknowledged that Monday is April Fool’s Day, the annual day of hoaxes and pranks. But, he added, law enforcement officials have to give each threat its due diligence.

“I know our department and Chesterfield’s both are investigating, so you have multiple jurisdictions looking into this,” Wickersham said.

He said it’s up to each school or school district to decide whether or not to cancel classes for Monday. Many schools are returning from spring break that was held last week.

Merritt Academy has announced in a message on its website that the school will not open for classes April 1.

School officials instructed parents and students to check their emails and voicemails “for more information regarding this closure.”
