Santa Fe non-profit facing a lack of affordable land to build on

SANTA FE, N.M. (KRQE) – A non-profit in Santa Fe, which builds homes for those in need, is facing a major obstacle: a lack of land to build on.

“There’s a deficit of affordable housing and housing in Santa Fe just market-rate housing,” said Executive Director Kurt Krahn.

The Santa Fe Habitat for Humanity is facing a hurdle as it goes into a busy building season.

“It’s worrisome; we want to build homes,” said Krahn.

Right now, they have some projects waiting to be completed and some properties they just got access to.

“We’re really thankful for the donation from the Garcia’s; we’ve had other donations,” said Krahn.

The concern is what to do next.

“We have staff. We have capacity to build, and right now, there is just a deficit of land,” said Krahn.

Krahn stated they have hundreds of people on their waitlist ready to apply for a home.

“We’re just trying to reach out [to] everyone and anyone, just letting them know that we’re looking for land,” said Krahn.

There are some incentives to donating land to help sweeten the deal.

“We can help facilitate the donation. We also work with Mortgage Finance Authority; we’re also able to offer state tax credits,” said Krahn.

It’s all in hope of helping everyone have a roof over their head.

“We’re an affordable housing builder and developer. We build homes for folks below 80 percent of area incomes, so we want to make sure homes are close to folks’ jobs and work,” said Krahn.
