The MBTA’s latest effort to eliminate slow zones on the Blue Line started Wednesday — with a derailment.

Crews working on the tracks near the Orient Heights Station in East Boston could not keep a rail cart where it belonged — on the rails — around 9 a.m. Wednesday, officials said.

“The rail cart, which was part of the equipment used for this project, experienced a low-speed, controlled derailment within the safety parameters in place for such incidents,” spokeswoman Lisa Battiston wrote in an email to the Globe.

All train service between the Maverick Station in East Boston and Wonderland in Revere was suspended Wednesday as part of a three-day effort Track Improvement Program by the T to upgrade tracks and signals to eliminate slow zones, according to Battiston. The repairs are supposed to be completed by Friday, according to the T.
