Succession: Everything you need to know about the filming locations

As befitting a series following the ludicrously rich, the action in Succession takes place in some of the most gloriously decadent and exclusive locations, with the private jets taking the characters to high-end locations in the USA, along with some luxurious stays across the globe in locations like Croatia, Italy, Barbados, Norway and the good old UK. Your average Joe might not get to be able to get too close, but you could certainly find some familiar locations if you’ve got some air miles to use up.

Where is Succession set?

It shouldn’t be any surprise to viewers that the Roy family are based close to the heart of their media empire in the metropolis of New York. While the bulk of their business and personal goings on takes place in the Big Apple, the jet-set lifestyle of the family and their entourage takes them to a number of locations across the globe. Sadly for Connor, no scenes take place in the actual White House.

And where is it filmed?

The American Irish Historical Society, Upper East Side, New York

As New York is where the family call home, the bulk of Succession was indeed filmed on location. Fans may be disappointed to hear that Logan’s iconic residence was filmed on a set, so sadly doesn’t exist in real life. The lobby, however, is in fact the entrance to the American Irish Historical Society in the Upper East Side, just stone’s throw away from The Metropolitan Museum of Art in Central Park.

180 East 88th Street, New York

Kendall’s stunning apartment is indeed a real penthouse. Spanning three floors, the luxury condominium is also in the Upper East Side, based in 180 East 88th Street. You too could live the Roy lifestyle here for a mere $29 million.

One World Trade Center, and 28 Liberty Street, New York

But let’s get down to business… The Waystar-Royco head offices were set in One World Trade Center through seasons one and two, but the glossy offices moved to the skyscraper at 28 Liberty Street for the remaining seasons.

East New York Freight Tunnel, Brooklyn, New York, & Battery Park, Manhattan, New York

If you’re finding all this opulence a little hard to swallow, why not get down and dirty at the location for the bachelor party in the first season’s eighth episode at East New York Freight Tunnel in Brooklyn. There’s not really a club there, but Tom would probably have forgotten to get you through the door anyway. And if you’re looking to mimic both Logan and Kendall’s sad, wintry walks with bodyguard Colin, head to Battery Park in south Manhattan. It’s a good place to sit and stare at the Hudson and wonder what might have been.

Rancho Alegre, Santa Fe & Korcula, Croatia

New York is of course just the tip of the iceberg., with the action in Succession taking the cast across the globe. For instance, Connor’s ranch is set in New Mexico, and is filmed on the real Rancho Alegre near Santa Fe. Season two sees the Roy family vacation in Croatia, with the final two episodes of season two taking place on the island of Korcula.

The Hamptons, Long Island, & Wainscott

Another of Logan Roy’s residences can be found in The Hamptons, Long Island, filmed at the 75-million-dollar Henry Ford Estate mansion, featuring the region’s largest ocean frontage. We return to the Hamptons in season three when Logan and Kendall visit shareholder (played by Adrien Brody) Josh Aaronson’s all-glass waterfront property, which is a private property in Wainscott. Far from being the isolated mansion shown on screen, it’s located on a public beach with several neighbouring homes, which the crew took special care to hide with some “creative geography”.

Where was Succession filmed in the UK?

The V&A Museum, Dundee

With Logan Roy hailing from Dundee, Scotland (the same birthplace as series star Brian Cox), the Roy clan make a visit back to the old country in season two, episode eight to celebrate their patriarch’s 50th anniversary at Waystar, with the main ceremony taking place at the V&A Dundee, with the highlight being Kendall’s.... interesting rap dedicated to his father (L to the OG…)

Gleneagles Hotel, Auchterarder

During their stay, the group stay at the lavish Gleneagles Hotel. It’s 45 minutes from Dundee, but Logan never had much love for his hometown anyway, hence him supporting an Edinburgh team (Hibs, NOT to be confused with Hearts).

Eastnor Castle, Herefordshire

The UK also serves as the location for Shiv and Tom’s unforgettable wedding at the end of season one, which was filmed at Eastnor Castle in Herefordshire. Based at the bottom of the Malvern Hills, it looks ripped out of a fairytale and yes, you can hire it for weddings. Just remember to treat the catering staff kindly… they’ve been through a lot.

Where was Succession filmed in Italy?

Val d’Orcia, Tuscany; Baroque Villa Cetinale, Sovicille; La Terrazza del Chiostro, Pienza; & Argiano, Montalcino

Some of the series most memorable moments have happened in Tuscany. The finale of season three saw Kendall, Shiv and Roman head to beautiful Tuscany to attend their mother’s wedding, and in true Succession fashion it was eventful.
The closing two episodes of the season were filmed in the picturesque Val d'Orcia region, with Caroline’s awkward bachelorette party filmed in the town of Cortona, in the Arezzo province, while the big day was filmed at the 17th Century Baroque Villa Cetinale near Sovicille. The restaurant that serves as the location for Kendall’s “intervention” is  La Terrazza del Chiostro at Pienza, and the season’s climactic showdown between Logan and the Roy siblings? That was the winery Argiano in Montalcino.

Where was Succession filmed in Norway?

Juvet Landscape Hotel, Valldal

Say what you like about Lukas Matsson (most of it would be true) but he sure knows how to pick a spot for an away day.
In actual fact, the GoJo retreat from season four, episode five was filmed at various locations across western Norway, but sharp-eyed viewers may recognise the amazing hotel from elsewhere. The award-winning Juvet Landscape Hotel – offering guests an immersive view of the surrounding forests and possibly other guests' bathrooms – is indeed the same location as used in the 2014 Alex Garland sci-fi film Ex Machina.

Romsdalen Gondola & Nesaksla, Andalsnes

Later in the episode, Roman and Kendall take a Gondola ride up the mountains to discuss the finer details of the Gojo deal and try to derail it (the deal, not the gondola, thankfully). This is the Romsdalen Gondola, and the mountain they ascend is Nesaksla, above the town of Åndalsnes. It’s probably the most beautiful location to ask if you’re being “Scooby-Doo’d.”

Where was Connor and Willa’s wedding filmed?

New York Harbour

We were back in New York for the wedding of the century, as Connor and Willa said their vows in front of guests numbering in the single digits aboard a luxury yacht in the New York Harbour. But I think both the event and the location might have been a bit overshadowed on the day…
