FBI offers $40K reward in effort to help solve Brianna Maitland case
WILLISTON, Vt. (WCAX) - On the 20th anniversary of her disappearance, the FBI announced a reward of up to $40,000 in an effort to help solve the case of Brianna Maitland.
In 2004, Maitland, then 17, disappeared after leaving her job at the Black Lantern Inn in Montgomery. Her green 1985 Oldsmobile 88 was later found backed into an abandoned building not far from the restaurant.
Police have investigated multiple leads in the years that followed, but never found her. They have said they believe she was a victim of foul play.
Tuesday marked 20 years since Maitland vanished, and Vermont State Police and the FBI held a news briefing to announce the reward in the case as part of an effort to get new tips.
“Certainly we will hear from people that have reported information in the past. We will vet it again. At some point you have to put information that’s been vetted numerous times, put it aside. There is a number of persons of interest in this case, that again, have been looked at for the whole two decades. Some we have ruled out, some we haven’t,” Vt. State Police Maj. Dan Trudeau said.
Vt. State Police Col. Matt Birmingham said investigators are still thinking about Maitland and her family, and working diligently to solve the case.
“It is not a cold case; it’s an unsolved case,” Birmingham said.
Police were not able to share with us what they think happened to Maitland, but they say they continue to get tips on a weekly basis. And they say no tip is too small and they follow up on all information they receive. If you can help investigators, call 1-800-CALL-FBI or the Vermont State Police tip hotline at 1-844-84-VTIPS.
