A new sewer line in Callahan County is causing controversy.

Residents in Clyde on Stephens St. are frustrated because parts of their front yards were dug up to install a new sewer line.

“Our problem is that the city has not completed the project,” Jayme Johnston said. “I spoke with the city manager through email. He sent me documents stating that they would be bringing in topsoil and revegetating, and they haven’t done any of it.”

According to Johnston, Clyde’s city manager told her the project that started in November would be completed by March 30.

“They told me that it is complete,” Johnston said. “Revegetation plant states that they were supposed to keep the top 6 inches of topsoil and then bring it back in. They did not keep it. So, now they are required to bring in topsoil.”

The homeowner says not having topsoil is a huge inconvenience.

“Half of my yard is torn up and has been for six months,” Johnston said. “There are rocks. We can’t mow. It’s not just me, it’s the entire block. Then it turns the corner and goes up the other block.”

The concerned resident says her concerns have gone unheard for too long and she has requested to speak at the city council meeting on May 14.

“All I want them to do is what they said they would do,” Johnston said. “I can’t fight the sewer line. I want them to do a final grade so that the water can flow under the culvert like it used to and bring back the topsoil.”

Wen reached out to the Clyde city administrator about these concerns, but he was not available for comment.
