The Transylvania Choral Society and the Brevard College Chamber Singers will present their spring concert at the Porter Center at Brevard College Thursday, May 2 at 7:30 p.m.

Under the direction of David Gresham, the main selection for the performance will be “Missa in Angustiis” by Joseph Haydn. The title translates as “Mass in a Time of Anxiety” and is also known as the “Lord Nelson Mass.”

In 1798 when Haydn wrote this piece, there was intense fear for Austria’s future as political and financial instability impacted the Esterhazy court which was Haydn’s patron. Haydn was suffering from exhaustion and confined to his room on doctor’s orders. Haydn’s chief biographer H.C. Robbins Landon called the Mass “Haydn’s greatest single composition.”

The Choral Society is partnering with TC Strong and Brevard College Counseling Services who will have tables in the lobby with information on their services.

Tickets for the concert are $20 and may be purchased online at the choir’s website: www.transylvaniachoral.org, from chorus members or at the box office before the concert.
