Where does bigotry come from? Why are some races considered inferior to others?

These are the big questions asked by Isabel Wilkerson, who travelled the world in search of answers. Her research led to Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents, a book that received critical acclaim and commercial success. Now the author’s story has been made into Origin, an American movie that was chosen as best film at the Venice International Film Festival.

Origin screens as part of Mariposa Arts Theatre’s Film Nights series on Wednesday, April 10 at Orillia Galaxy Cinemas at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. Ticket sales begin at the door at 3 p.m. Tickets cost $10 for general admission, $5 for students.

Director Ava DuVernay brings to life the story of writer Isabel Wilkerson, who sets herself on a path of global investigation and discovery, while grappling with tremendous personal tragedy. Wilkerson is consulted for her opinion after the tragic shooting of Trayvon Martin, a 17-year-old African-American. She explores the idea of while race led to Martin’s senseless death, it may not be the only determining factor in bigotry. She visits Germany to discover how the Nazis used some of America’s racist laws as inspiration for their extermination of the Jews. She visits India to understand their concept of caste. Intertwined with her ideas and discoveries, Wilkerson suffers the loss of her husband, elderly mother and cousin. She often imagines herself speaking with those who have passed away.

Origin is a moving drama that is unafraid to ask big questions. It honours its source material with powerful performances in service of a deeply emotional story. If you like your films carefully crafted, and leaving you with plenty to think about and discuss after, you won’t want to miss Origin.

Origin screens in Orillia for two shows only, Wednesday, April 10 at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tickets are on sale at the door starting at 3 p.m. Payment is by cash, credit or debit.
