STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A murder trial is underway this week in the shooting death of a Clifton woman, which prosecutors say was carried out by an ex-con who had killed before.

Shaheem Chavis, 46, is facing charges that include first-degree murder, second-degree murder and first-degree assault in connection with the Sept. 21, 2022, slaying.
