JEFFERSONVILLE — The IU Southeast men’s and women’s tennis teams finished second in the Gordon Crawford Classic, which took place Sunday at Jeffersonville High School's Mark Reilly Tennis Center.
The invitational featured the host Grenadiers, the University of Southern Indiana and Hanover College. The Screaming Eagles won the event, going 2-0 while the Grenadiers went 1-1 and the Panthers 0-2.
This was the first year of the invite, which is named for the father of USI tennis coach Chris Crawford.
The Screaming Eagles swept IUS 7-0 in both the men's and women's matches.Â
MEN
IUS rolled to a 6-1 win over Hanover in its Senior Day match. Keith Asplund and Owen Law won 6-3 at No. 2 doubles while Eric Whitehouse and Miguel Sampaio triumphed 7-5 at No. 3 doubles.
Connor Mason and Camden Jones, who lost at No. 1 doubles, came back to win their respective singles matches. Mason won 6-1, 6-3 at No.1 whle Jones triumphed 6-1, 7-6 at No. 2.
Asplund, Law and Sampaio were double-winners for the Grenadiers. Asplund, a former Red Devil standout and Hanover transfer, won 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3 singles. Sampaio defeated Jeff alum Charley Williams 6-4, 6-1 at No. 4 singles. Law won the final point for the Grenadiers with a 6-2, 6-1 triumph over Castillo at No. 5 singles.Â
WOMEN
IU Southeast edged Hanover 4-3 for a Senior Day victory.Â
Anna Littlefield triumphed 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles while Katie Weimer won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2. Also, Syrenia Hardy was victorious 6-0, 7-5 at No. 3 while freshman Maci Vaughn won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5.Â
Littlefield and Weimer also won 6-3 at No. 1 doubles.Â
Both IUS teams are scheduled to be back in action at 1 p.m. Friday at Earlham College.
