I-135 ramp closure at Kellogg starts Monday

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — Major repair work is coming to one of the busiest interchanges in Wichita.

Monday, work will begin on the Kellogg and Interstate 135 Interchange. The Kansas Department of Transportation says, starting at 9 a.m., the ramp from northbound I-135 to westbound Kellogg will close until 1 p.m. while crews remove the stripe on the left lane of the ramp over Hydraulic.

The red line and X mark the ramp that will close. The proposed detour has northbound I-135 drivers taking the 1st/2nd St. exit ramp, then re-entering I-135 southbound via 2nd St. to get to westbound Kellogg. (Map courtesy KDOT)

Traffic will be detoured up to the 2nd Street exit and back onto southbound I-135 to reach the west Kellogg exit. As soon as that is complete, the ramp will reopen, but then the southbound exit from I-135 to west Kellogg will close until at least mid-May.

During the first phase, southbound traffic needing to head west on Kellogg will need to exit at Lincoln instead, then take Lincoln east to the northbound I-135 onramp. They can then exit from northbound I-135 onto westbound Kellogg.

Kansas Turnpike Authority to implement cashless tolls in July

Workers will be milling, patching and placing a concrete overlay on each side during the project, which has a total of four phases, starting with the southbound ramp to westbound Kellogg.

The remaining three phases are:

  • Phase 2: The northbound I-135 ramp to westbound U.S. 54 closed from May 17 to June 26

  • Phase 3: The eastbound U.S. 54 ramp to northbound I-135 closed from June 27 to Sept. 4

  • Phase 4: The westbound U.S. 54 ramp to southbound I-135 closed from Sept. 5 to Nov. 15

Speed limits will be reduced to 45 mph in the work zones. KDOT urges drivers to stay alert and watch out for construction workers and possible blowing dust during construction.
