PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — After an Oregon coast animal shelter became overwhelmed with abandoned cats and kittens this past year, the Oregon Humane Society stepped in to help, transferring 36 cats to their Portland campus on Tuesday.

The cats came from the Oregon Coast Small Animal Rescue (OSCAR) in Toledo, which had been unable to close for much-needed upgrades due to the influx of animals needing their care, according to OHS. This prompted OSCAR to reach out to OHS for assistance.

The cats are now staying in OHS’s new Behavior and Rescue Center to get adjusted.

Sharon Harmon, President and CEO of OHS said this type of situation is exactly what the new center is for.

“We built the Behavior and Rescue Center so we can mobilize quickly when animals need immediate help,” says Sharon Harmon, OHS’s President and CEO. “This building will allow us to care for these cats in a separate space until they are ready for adoption.”

OHS says some of the cats from OSCAR may be available for adoption starting this weekend. You can view the profiles of the cats and kittens looking for a home here.
