The Humboldt Bay and Eureka Model Railroad Club will hold its annual “Spring Open House” April 27 and 28 from noon to 5 p.m. each day at its clubhouse, corner of Seventh and A streets in Eureka. There is a requested $5 donation at the door for adults, with children 10 and under admitted for free. There will also be many railroad model items for sale.

The club was established in September 1972 and has occupied its current location since April 1974. The first track was laid by member John Huckaby in June 1974. Today, the layout is 855 square feet with 2500 feet of track navigating through and over mountains, valleys, bridges, trestles, towns and rail yards.

The backdrop was painted by Bill Kohse and Nancy Parsons. The layout is primarily DC (direct current) with handheld remote controls. The two switching sections are DCC (Digital Command Control). There have been many changes and upgrades over the years.

The railroad is freelanced but many scenes are based on Humboldt County locations. This year, folks will notice the improved logging section built by member Lee Brunskill. Also featured will be Bill Helwer-Carlson and his Spokane, Portland and Seattle trains.
