Jefferson City woman charged with arson, property damage

A Jefferson City woman faces charges connected with an incident that occurred Tuesday.

Shameka Price was charged in Cole County with first-degree arson and second-degree property damage.

A Jefferson City Police Department probable cause statement said police responded to reports of a disturbance early Tuesday in the 300 block of Union Street. The caller, Price, said she wanted a man moved from her house, but was concerned he had her car keys.

Price reportedly took the man's items from inside the residence and lit one of his shoes on fire before going back into the house. The man was able to put out the fire and call for a ride away from the area.

Officers said they noticed an orange glow from the rear of the house while they were on scene, and discovered another pile of property on fire behind the residence. The fire reportedly spread to the deck, and police reported hearing an explosion as they sought a fire extinguisher.

Authorities were able to extinguish the flames, but estimated around $500 in burned property between clothes, a backpack and electronics that were damaged.

During the investigation, authorities discovered there were two children inside the residence when the fire was started. Price said she did not start the fire, and that it occurred in a pit on the back deck.
