CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KWWL)—Two single-family homes in Cedar Rapids have significant damage after they caught fire on Sunday afternoon.

It happened in the 3700 block of Blue Mound Drive NE just after 3:15 p.m.

Cedar Rapids firefighters said it started from fire pit ashes in the yardy next to the garage and then spread to the houses.

Firefighters used a reconnected hose line to knock the fire down on the outside of both houses.

The house where the fire started sustained heavy fire damage to the garage, but the interior of the house was unaffected.

The wind pushed the fire to the neighboring house to the east, causing heavy damage to the living area.

Everyone inside the houses safely made it out, and there were no injuries.

Cedar Rapids firefighters reminded the community that fire pit ashes can retain their heat for days, so you need to thoroughly soak them before discarding them.
