A man accused of breaking into a home in Lafayette last week and raping a teenager dropped his wallet at the scene, officials said.

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) —  Prosecutors filed formal charges against 25-year-old Preston Eric Mendoza Wednesday. The man accused of breaking into a home in Lafayette last week and raping a teenager dropped his wallet at the scene, officials said.

Prosecutors said police identified him because they found his wallet near the girl's house, and matched his license picture with the one at file at the Bureau of Motor Vehicles.

As News 18 previously reported, officials said he broke into the home early in the morning of April 10. Prosecutors stated he crawled through the 17-year-old victim's window to get into and out of the house. Besides his wallet, Mendoza was identified through multiple fingerprints on the window glass.

He was arrested outside another home in Lafayette the next day.
