GIBSON CITY, Ill. (WCIA) — Midway through a replacement project, part of a new railroad bridge slipped into Gibson City’s Drummer Creek on Wednesday.

Construction crews were in the midst of replacing the old span for the Norfolk Southern line with a new 73-foot span. Norfolk Southern said the incident was not caused by the rigging of the bridge piece, but by the temporary fill supporting the crane footing.
“Our crane operator was able to act quickly, and the project was completed as scheduled,” a Norfolk Southern spokesperson said.
The bridge has since reopened to train traffic.
