Dhaka University and the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal are scheduled for today to celebrate flag hoisting day, marking the first hoisting of Bangladesh’s national flag before independence on the Dhaka University campus in 1971.

Dhaka University will celebrate the day at Battala on the campus in the morning.

The Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal will hold a discussion at the National Press Club auditorium on tomorrow on Sunday.

Ganatantra Mancha leaders and Bangladesh Nationalist Party standing committee member Adul Mayeen Khan are scheduled to address the discussion to be chaired by Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal president ASM Abdur Rob, a party release said.

On March 2, 1971, then Dhaka University Central Students Union vice-president ASM Abdur Rob, on behalf of the Swadhin Bangla Chhatra Sangram Parishad, first hoisted the national flag, designed with a golden map of Bangladesh inside a red circle set against a green background, atop the university Arts Building amid tumultuous cheers from the spirited students in a massive gathering.

In the nine-month War of Independence, the flag served as the symbol of the state of Bangladesh and was used by the provisional government of Bangladesh to buttress its political, diplomatic and military struggle to free the country from the marauding Pakistani military.

After independence, the national flag, with a modified version of the original design in which the map was removed, was officially adopted on January 17, 1972.
