The police blotter is published to give readers an abridged look at criminal activity in their community and neighborhood. It is simply an illustration of what local law enforcement, funded by taxpayers, must deal with daily throughout the Española Valley.

 Española Police officers, Ohkay Owingeh Tribal Police, Rio Arriba County Sheriff’s deputies or State Police responded to the following calls:

  

Held hostage

March 29

  12:14 a.m. A Speedway caller reported two men are smoking fentanyl on the side of the building.

  5:04 a.m. A Calle Chacoma Vista caller said a truck crashed into a tree in front of their house.

 12:46 p.m. A caller requested a welfare check on a man in Alcalde because there was rat poison in some water on his table. When the caller tried to wake the man, he felt hot and though she slapped him in the face, he wasn’t responding. When medics arrived, they found a block of rat poison that had been shredded with a cheese grater and mixed with tea. An investigating deputy noted it appeared to be a suicide attempt.

  3:58 p.m. A caller wants to speak with an officer because he said his uncle is dead in his house. He also said a man took his whole family hostage.

  5:21 p.m. A caller reported a truck was all over the road near Chimayó Elementary. The caller heard a bang, then the vehicle fled at a high rate of speed. A deputy found the truck on State Road 76 going toward Truchas; it got stuck in a ditch and had heavy front-end damage. The driver was allegedly very drunk and making spontaneous statements about deputies tackling him and breaking his back.

  5:31 p.m. A Po Pay Avenue caller said their 50-year-old uncle is passed out and turning blue. CPR was performed and one dose of Narcan was administered.

  5:57 p.m. A caller reported a 31-year-old man ran from a mental health facility on Saiz Lane. He was found and taken to the hospital to be evaluated.

  7:58 p.m. A caller reported someone in a truck threw a drink at their vehicle near the Chimayó Trading Post.

  9:03 p.m. A vehicle side-swiped a fence on Mountain View Street and North McCurdy Road.

  9:36 p.m. A caller said a man was being beaten and the assailants dragged him into the road near Sena’s Radiator and he’s lying there. Officers could not find a man on the road.

  10:29 p.m. A caller reported a RZR is doing donuts on Pheasant Lane and La Joya Street.

  11:20 p.m. An Española Hospital caller requested assistance because a patient is being combative and they only have one security guard on duty.

  11:22 p.m. A caller saw a woman walking on the side of the road near Abiquiú and she said she was held against her will. The responding deputy said the woman was very drunk and wanted more alcohol.

 

What’s with the jigsaws?

March 30

  1:54 a.m. An Abiquiú caller reported a Ford F-150 went down an embankment.

  2:39 a.m. A caller said a vehicle crashed into another vehicle on Old Hospital Road and the two drivers started fighting.

 6:50 a.m. A Wastewater Plant caller said his employee called him to tell him that someone broke into the building.

  7:51 a.m. An Ohkay Eagle Mart caller reported a man with tattoos on his face is hitting his head on something and seems to be tweaking.

 10:32 a.m. An Allsups caller wants several people in tents behind the store to be dispersed.

  11:27 a.m. A caller near Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish said two men in hoodies and masks are walking and carrying jigsaws.

  12:25 p.m. A death notice was delivered to a home in Alcalde.

  1:07 p.m. A caller reported there are two big bags of trash and broken glass all over the road near the Santa Clara Bridge and South Riverside Drive.

  2:15 p.m. A caller said several people are setting up tents near the ditch along the tree line on Calle Talache and North McCurdy Road.

  3:35 p.m. A Dollar General in Española caller said a man pulled a knife on an employee. 

  4:20 p.m. A Coyote caller reported his house was broken into. The front door was unlocked and a 6-volt battery for a tractor was taken along with a charger, an extension cord and two rifles.

  4:40 p.m. A Zia Credit Union caller said someone is living behind the dumpster.

  6:18 p.m. A McDonald’s caller reported a man with a bloody face seems drunk and is refusing to leave the drive-thru area.

  6:31 p.m. A drunk guest beat up a manager at Rancho de Chimayó then fled in a pickup truck.

  7:23 p.m. A Dollar General in Española caller said an ex-associate started pounding on the door and yelling insults and threats. 

  7:32 p.m. A woman with pink hair was looking into vehicles in the parking lot at Freddy’s and checking to see if any of the doors were open.

  8:34 p.m. A man at Española Pathways Shelter was bleeding from the face and was really confused.

  10 p.m. An Española Transit Mix caller said they have been having issues with homeless people trying to get into the trucks and warehouse.

  10:40 p.m. A County Road 1 in Hernandez caller reported the neighbor is causing problems. He’s outside putting up lights that kill trees.

  11:04 p.m. A Strawberry Road caller said someone is shooting paintballs at her house. 

  11:52 p.m. An Española Pathways Shelter reported there’s a big fight going on. A man is being jumped.

 

Couch fire

March 31

  1:24 a.m. A Calle Las Tunas caller said her brother was there with his friend and a vehicle came up and someone starting shooting at his vehicle with a BB gun. Three windows were shot out.

  4:11 a.m. An ambulance was requested on Private Drive 1544A in Hernandez because a 3-year-old child was hit during a domestic violence incident and has a bloody nose.

  5:18 a.m. A North Coronado Avenue caller said his uncle is out of control and talking to himself.

  8:21 a.m. An Ojo Caliente caller reported being assaulted on March 25. She didn’t report it right away but her sternum is bruised and two ribs are separated.

  10:26 a.m. A Calle de Pajarito caller reported a couch is on fire outside.

  12:27 p.m. A Chama caller said there’s a fire across from the Jehovah’s Witness Church. 

  1:11 p.m. A caller reported a man is beating up her boyfriend at Calle Rivera and North Riverside Drive. She left because someone pulled a gun on her.

  6:27 p.m. The baby box alarm was activated at the Española Fire Station. 

  8:19 p.m. A caller reported his trailer was stolen from his property in Truchas.

  8:22 p.m. A Calle Chavez caller said their house was broken into and four pairs of Jordans are missing. The person got in through the kitchen window.

  9:18 p.m. People in a tent at Española Pathways Shelter were asked to leave and a man flashed a gun through the tent.

  10:38 p.m. A Santa Clara Drive caller said his 57-year-old wife took a bunch of sleeping pills.

  11:28 p.m. A caller reported seeing three transients walking around Private Drive 1503 and County Road 1 in Hernandez.

Man in a ditch

April 1

  12:01 a.m. A caller left some bags of chicken and his deposit on the counter at KFC and he thinks someone came in through the back of the building and took them.

  7:56 a.m. An Ojo Caliente caller reported a neighbor is acting irate, walking around outside in his underwear, yelling and hitting himself.

  8:30 a.m. A man was arrested at Fairview Lane and North Railroad Avenue for receiving and transferring a stolen vehicle.

  9:34 a.m. A Vista del Rio Apartments caller reported a window is broken in one of the apartments and she thinks the person who did it is in that apartment.

  9:44 a.m. A caller said he was contracted by Lowe’s Home Improvement to do some work and the equipment was stolen from behind the store over the weekend.

  10:54 a.m. A Goodwill caller reported there’s a car by two of the tents and two men are yelling at each other. One of the men has a knife and is threatening the other man with it.

  12:06 p.m. A caller reported her husband keeps harassing her via text message and has been doing so for about a month. She said her husband sent a text saying he was going to call the police to try and embarrass her.

  3:25 p.m. A man inside the Santa Cruz Country Store was refusing to leave, throwing things everywhere and eating merchandise that wasn’t paid for.

  4:26 p.m. A drunk man at the Ohkay Casino was slurring and couldn’t communicate. He was also unable to stand. He was transported to the emergency room.

  6:34 p.m. A caller reported a woman is lying near Pizza Hut and looks purple. She was reported to have a low pulse and was snoring. She was transported to the emergency room.

  6:55 p.m. A caller said her brother called to tell her there’s a man in the ditch near Family Dollar in Chimayó.

  7:22 p.m. A man was in the lobby of Burger King, acting like he’s on something, yelling and cussing at everyone.

  7:23 p.m. A caller requested a welfare check on a man who got out of a car and fell near the homeless encampment at Valdez Bridge.

  7:31 p.m. A Calle Redonda caller found bullet holes in the front of her house.

   8:53 p.m. A caller requested a welfare check on a man who was on his knees on the shoulder of the road in Velarde, trying to flag people down.

Hacked food stamps

April 2

   9:10 a.m. A caller wants to report that his food stamps have been hacked. It happened on March 10.

  10:05 a.m. A Walmart caller said a woman is going to different parts of the store and breaking things.

  11:51 a.m. An El Centro Family Health caller reported a man claimed to have a weapon in his waistband. He was upset because they didn’t have an appointment for him; he didn’t brandish the firearm but threatened to shoot them.

  12:36 p.m. A Cook Street caller said his house was broken into and items were taken.

  1:13 p.m. A caller requested a welfare check on a man south of the Rio del Oso bridge, who is throwing himself in front of vehicles as they go by.

  1:17 p.m. A student was in possession of a marijuana vape pen at the Española Middle School.

  6:05 p.m. A caller requested a welfare check on a man slumped over the wheel of a vehicle in Alcalde.

  6:33 p.m. An Obsidian Loop caller reported her husband was choking her 31-year-old son. She said the son told the man not to hit her and that’s when he attacked him.

  7:14 p.m. A caller said two children are walking around the neighborhood, knocking on doors on Calle Redonda and El Llano Road and asking for money.

  8:55 p.m. A Walmart caller said a man who’s been trespassed is being aggressive. He’s pulled a knife on people before.

  10:32 p.m. An Alcalde caller reported a man pushed her and she pulled a knife on him; he took away the knife and pointed it at her.

Getting ‘busy’ at work

April 3

  10:25 a.m. A caller said one of the sheds at the county complex was broken into. There was a hole in the fence and several items were stolen.

  11 a.m. A Murphy’s Express caller reported a man in a pickup truck dropped a meth pipe in the parking lot.

  11:17 a.m. A Dixon caller said a man in his late-30s is in and out of consciousness and might be overdosing. The Dixon Volunteer Fire Department responded and said the man was given a ride home because he was too tired from cleaning the ditch. He refused medical attention.

  12:57 p.m. A caller said a man at the bus stop near the Ohkay Eagle Mart is giving a bus driver a hard time. 

  3:12 p.m. A caller said an employee from La Paletaria is having intercourse in front of the door and they think it’s inappropriate behavior.

  3:32 p.m. A man went to EPD to file a report because a man hit his dog with a stick.

  4:55 p.m. A Chamita caller reported a woman is threatening to go to her house with an officer and keeps saying she’s going to beat her up.

  6:53 p.m. A 420 Emporia caller reported a bald man tried to punch him. He wants the man removed from the property and said he tried to hit him again and he will punch him back.

  8:32 p.m. A caller heard about 40 shots coming from the end of the road at Calle Vigil and North Coronado Avenue.

  9:16 p.m. A deputy was involved in a pursuit near the Dollar General in Hernandez. Two people were detained near mile marker 229.

 

Green men 

April 4

  12:34 a.m. An Ojo Caliente caller thinks someone might be messing with the electricity because it’s gone off multiple times and there’s no wind. She wants a deputy to go out and make sure no one is messing with the lines.

  2:02 a.m. A Velarde caller reported seeing a hang glider coming from the Ohkay Casino with a green man standing on it.

  2:22 a.m. A man was irate, yelling and throwing items at the Española Hospital.

  6:02 a.m. A dog bite was reported on Calle la Tierra.

  10 a.m. A Velarde caller said a gray hatchback is driving up and down the road, trying to run down trash cans.

  12:22 p.m. An Inside Out caller reported a man in a vehicle is unresponsive. Staff members are trying to administer Narcan.

  3:59 p.m. A Medanales caller reported someone in a car is dumping trash on the side of the road.

  4:53 p.m. A Calle Olivas caller said a woman stole her card and is using it.

  6:55 p.m. A caller reported being set up by her boyfriend, to get jumped at Valdez Park. She said her boyfriend held her down to get beat up, but she escaped and was uninjured.

  7:05 p.m. A man was reportedly overdosing at Cook’s Mobile Home Park.

  7:12 p.m. A BOLO was issued for a Toyota Corolla because an older man beat up a 9-year-old and put him in the vehicle before fleeing.

  7:16 p.m. A Pheasant Lane caller said she has a stalker. She’s been talking with someone on Facebook who wants to meet up with her and she was going to hang out with him but then she changed her mind. The guy got angry and said he was going to wait outside her house all night and told her that he followed her.

  7:31 p.m. A Walmart caller reported the window washer that hangs out in the parking lot sprayed him in the face with his window washing fluid when he told him to leave.

  8:08 p.m. A Walgreens caller said three men are outside by the doors and one is sharpening a stick.

  9:16 p.m. A man was shot at the Santa Claran Casino Hotel.

  10:22 p.m. An officer was flagged down at North Riverside Drive and Fairview Lane because someone took his car with his wife inside. The reporting officer noted all was OK and the man got out of the vehicle near Pinch Penny Washomat.

  11:40 p.m. A Days Inn caller said she is staying there and left for 10 minutes. When she came back, the clerk wouldn’t let her into the room.
