A Palestinian American TV reporter has sued the Detroit station where he worked until recently, saying he was fired after filing complaints about discriminatory treatment and what he saw as biased coverage of the <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/israel-hamas-war/" target="_blank" class="contextual_link">war in Gaza</a>.

Ibrahim Samra said his bosses at CBS Detroit chastised him for posting scenes of local protests and rallies on social media and quizzed him about his views on Hamas in a way he believed implied he supports the group, which the United States has designated as a terrorist organization.

He said the television station fired him on Feb. 28, shortly after declining to air his reporting on the campaign to urge “uncommitted” votes in the Michigan Democratic primary to protest the Biden White House’s funding of the Israeli government. Samra was hired in 2022 to cover the Detroit metro area, which is home to one of the largest Arab American populations in the country.

“All he wanted was equal airtime for Palestinian, Arab, and Muslim voices to be able to tell timely, relevant, newsworthy stories about the war in Gaza as it unfolded,” said attorney Amanda Ghannam, who filed the lawsuit on Samra’s behalf in federal court Thursday. “And he wasn’t allowed to do that.”

A spokesperson for the station said it could not comment on personnel matters but that “we strongly disagree with the characterization of these events and will address this more fully through the proper legal channels.”

Disputes over how to cover the ongoing conflict — from the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel that killed 1,200 people to Israel’s assault on Gaza that has killed more than 32,000 people — have roiled newsrooms across the country. In November, hundreds of journalists signed a public letter condemning Israel’s killing of reporters in Gaza and criticizing Western media coverage. Earlier this month, the union representing New York Times employees accused Times management of targeting Middle Eastern and North African employees in its investigation into a newsroom leak about a controversial story about the Hamas attacks in Israel.

These fights have centered on old questions about editorial objectivity and power dynamics within newsrooms, while raising new ones about standards for coverage and bias in news reporting.

Samra, 28, launched his career in Indiana and joined the Detroit station in 2022. He was the only Arab, Palestinian and Muslim employee at the station.

In his lawsuit, he alleges that management began sidelining and scrutinizing him shortly after war broke out in October.

While on leave caring for his sick mother in Chicago that month, Samra posted a video from a nearby antiwar demonstration on his personal Instagram account. After his return to work, station executives brought him in for a meeting and “bombarded him with a series of accusatory and offensive questions about the ‘intention’ behind the video,” his lawsuit claimed.

Samra responded that he was “simply documenting what was happening in the community,” the lawsuit noted, adding that other station employees post images from their personal lives on social media “without issue.”

Samra said in his lawsuit that he soon became concerned that the station was presenting a one-sided view of the conflict. “Non-Arab/Palestinian/Muslim employees” were allowed to share their experiences of living in Israel and cover stories of Israelis’ perspectives, the lawsuit alleged. “Meanwhile, Defendants’ coverage never mentioned Palestine, Palestinians, Gaza, or the Palestinian- and Arab American families who were also suffering as a result of the war.”

In early November, Samra said he pitched a local news story about a resident of Livonia, Mich., who was trapped in Gaza, but his managers dismissed the idea and questioned his motivations.

In December, Samra told his supervisors in writing that he felt mistreated and asked for an investigation into his claims of biased coverage. His lawsuit claims that the CBS human resources executive who explored his complaint substantiated his concerns about coverage — and also determined that his social media posts had not violated any of the company’s policies or journalistic standards.

“After this investigation largely substantiated [Samra’s] concerns about the disparities in coverage, CBS News Detroit could have taken the opportunity to do the right thing to listen to their staff to improve their coverage and balance out their reporting,” Ghannam said. “Instead they fired Mr. Samra.”

At a news conference in Detroit on Monday to publicize his lawsuit, Samra said that after his firing, he encountered a young man at a mosque who expressed regret to hear about the reporter’s dismissal.

Then, he said, the young man told him that he had lost 300 relatives in Gaza over the past five months. “These are the stories that need to be shared,” Samra said.
