A Scottish Catholic priest chosen by the Pope to become a bishop has died shortly before he was due to be ordained.

The Roman Catholic Bishop of Galloway, the Right Rev Frank Dougan, announced the “untimely” death of Father Martin Chambers, 59, a priest of the diocese of Galloway.

Pope Francis nominated Chambers on February 2 as the new bishop of the diocese of Dunkeld and his episcopal ordination was scheduled for April 27.

Chambers had been parish priest at Our Lady of the Assumption and St Meddan’s Church in Troon. He would have been 60 in June.

The Catholic Church said on Wednesday that he had died in his sleep. His funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.
