NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - Irene Milsap was riding a motorcycle with her fiance, Paul Howell, on Saturday evening. Milsap couldn’t have expected what happened on their ride.

Milsap said a driver pulled in front of them multiple times, slamming on his brakes.

”Paul pulled over into the median and told me to stay on the bike basically to protect me,” she said. Moments later, Howell was shot. “That is not something you unsee ever.”

She rushed over to him, “I couldn’t save him. I tried stopping him. I tried so hard. The only thing that I could do is say ‘Please, hang on baby...’ he literally tried to spit out ‘I love you too’ but you could see it in his eyes he knew what I was saying.”

The vivid memory of it haunts her.

”I go to sleep at night trying to think of all the good memories and not that memory but it just wakes me up all the time.”

She said she tries to think of better times as she remembers him.

“He was just that gentle giant that everybody loved. He was just the type of person that literally if he had a last dollar in his pocket he’d give it to you.”

But what she’ll miss most, “The hugs, the hugs and he wasn’t a hugger all the time but when he embraced you he embraced you with everything it wasn’t just a quick hug or a quick kiss.”

Now she wishes she had just one more of those hugs or one more “I love you.”

”There’s not enough I love yous that I could have thrown at him I didn’t throw enough I feel like.”

Murfreesboro police arrested Joseph Gann in connection to this shooting. He faces multiple charges including second-degree murder. MPD says the shooting is still under investigation.
