CLEAR, WITH A LOW AROUND 66. SOUTH WIND 3 TO 6 MPH. FRIDAY MOSTLY SUNNY, THE PUSH TO GET A LOCAL SPORTS LEGEND HIS PENSION FROM MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL. SO GLAD WE GET TO SHARE THIS STORY. GARY COOPER WAS A STAR ATHLETE FROM GARDEN CITY, MAKING IT ALL THE WAY TO THE BIG LEAGUES BACK IN THE EARLY 80'S. IN AN ALL NEW SOUTHERN ROUTES, WHY THIS 67 YEAR OLD AND THOSE WHO KNOW HIM BEST ARE HOPING HE GETS ONE MORE DAY IN THE SHOW. ONE MORE DAY.....JUST ONE MORE GAME. "IT'LL BE WONDERFUL IF I CAN GET TO THAT POINT IS TO BE ABLE TO GET THAT ONE DAY." A DAY ON MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL ROSTER IS WHAT 67-YEAR- OLD GARY COOPER OF SAVANNAH IS ASKING FOR FROM A TEAM.....AND A SPORT HE GAVE SO MUCH OF HIS LIFE TO. "IT WAS JUST CRAZY, MAN. I ENJOYED IT. YOU KNOW, IT'S SOMETHING THAT EVERY KID WANTS TO DO, PLAY PROFESSIONAL BASEBALL." BACK IN 1980, COOPER, A FORMER MULTI-SPORT STAR AT GROVES HIGH SCHOOL IN GARDEN CITY, ACHIEVED THE DREAM OF SO MANY ATHLETES.....HE GOT THE CALL TO THE BIG LEAGUES.....THIS GEORGIA BOY JOINING THE ATLANTA BRAVES. I WAS THERE IN FRONT OF 45,000 PEOPLE. AND IT WAS CRAZY." COOPER SPENT EXACTLY 42 DAYS ON THE BRAVES ROSTER....ONE DAY SHORT OF QUALIFYING FOR A PENSION FROM MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL.....AFTER PLAYING IN 21 GAMES FOR ATLANTA, MOSTLY AS A PINCH-RUNNER AND SUBSTITUTE OUTFIELDER....COOPER WAS SENT BACK TO THE MINOR LEAGUES, NEVER TO REACH THE SPORTS HIGHEST LEVEL AGAIN....NEVER TO REACH THAT 43RD DAY NEEDED TO DRAW A PENSION. "HE'S GONE THROUGH LIFE KIND OF KIND OF HARDER THAN THAN A LOT OF PEOPLE AND A LOT OF PEOPLE WITH THE SAME STRUGGLE. BUT HE NEVER HE NEVER STOPPED PUTTING HIS FOOT ONE IN FRONT OF THE OTHER." ROBERT JONAS HELPING LEAD THE FIGHT TO HELP COOPER. IN ADDITION TO HIRING COOPER TO WORK IN THE LANDSCAPING BUSINESS, JONAS CREATING A CHANGE.ORG PETITION ASKING THE BRAVES TO GIVE THE GREATER SAVANNAH ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME MEMBER HIS ONE MORE DAY.....AND TO SUPPORT HIMSELF IN HIS GOLDEN YEARS. "HE'S SUPPOSED TO BE ENJOYING THIS TIME. SO WE'RE WE'RE TRYING EVERYTHING WE POSSIBLY CAN TO HELP HIM OUT." "I'LL DO MY BEST, WHATEVER IT TAKES. YOU KNOW BENCH COACH OR BULLPEN COACH. The Greater Savannah Athletic Hall of Fame announcing their Class of 2024 this week.The inductees and high school student-athletes of the year will be honored during the Induction Ceremony set for Monday, May 6 at the Alee Shrine Temple. The event starts at 6 p.m.Below is a list of all the honorees.Athletes:Donald Chumley - Groves High School Football, University of Georgia 1981-1984. Drafted by the Forty-Niners in ’85 NFL Draft, Played for Calgary Stampeders in the CFL.Kris Edge - Savannah Christian Preparatory School Baseball, University of Georgia Baseball 1999-2002. Frank Kearse - Savannah High School Football, Alabama A&M, Drafted by the Dolphins in the 2011 NFL Draft, 5-year NFL career with the Panthers, Cowboys, and Redskins.Jason Shiell - Windsor Forest High School Baseball, Drafted by the Braves in the 1995 MLB Draft. 13-year professional baseball career, including 3 years in Major League Baseball with Atlanta, San Diego, and Boston.
