Man Arrested Over Deadly Stabbing of 27-Year-Old Mother as She Pushed Baby in Stroller

The 25-year-old man was named as the suspect following the fatal attack on Saturday

A man has been arrested over the deadly stabbing of a 27-year-old mother as she pushed her baby in a stroller.

On Tuesday, April 9, West Yorkshire Police in England confirmed in a press release that 25-year-old Habibur Masum from Oldham in Lancashire was arrested on suspicion of killing Kulsuma Akter on Saturday, April 6, as she walked down the street with her child.

Masum was previously named as the suspect after police appealed to members of the public to help find him. He was discovered during the early hours of April 9 in the town of Aylesbury, around 180 miles south of where the murder took place. 

“Members of the public and the media are thanked for widely sharing appeals for information in relation to Kulsuma’s death,” the police said in their statement.

Akter was stabbed in Bradford, Yorkshire at 3:21 pm local time and later died from her injuries after being taken to the hospital.

Authorities confirmed that the victim and suspect were known to each other, with West Yorkshire Police stating that they had referred themselves to the Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC) due to previously coming into contact with Akter before her death.

According to the BBC, court documents revealed that Masum was charged with threatening to kill Akter on Nov. 24 and assaulting her on Nov. 23. With the incidents allegedly taking place in Manchester, the outlet reports that Greater Manchester Police have also referred themselves to the Independent Office for Police Conduct. 

“She was with her young baby at the time of the incident — the baby is safe and was not harmed in the incident,” the police said per the press release, adding that a 23-year-old man also remains in custody after being arrested on Monday, April 8 in Cheshire on suspicion of assisting an offender.

“This is a tragic incident in which a mother has lost her life in the most horrific of circumstances,” Detective Chief Inspector Stacey Atkinson, of West Yorkshire Police’s Homicide and Enquiry Team said in a statement.  

“We understand that this has caused a considerable amount of concern in the local community,” the detective added.
