Here are some Earth Day events happening across York Region.
NEWMARKET: THE ELECTRONICS AND BATTERY RECYCLING EVENT
At this drive-thru, drop-off event, residents can bring unwanted electronics and used batteries to recycle. Accepted items include computer and audiovisual parts such as hard drives, speakers, headphones, cameras, including security cameras, musical instruments, telephones, including cellular phones, and household batteries. Computers will also be accepted. Do not bring: cars, toys, power tools, appliances and information technology, telecommunications, audiovisual (ITT/AV) equipment weighing more than 250 kilograms (551 pounds).
When: April 22 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Where: The Robert N. Shelton Operations Centre at 1275 Maple Hill Ct. near Mulock Drive and Harry Walker Parkway.

VAUGHAN: CITIZEN SCIENCE — SPACE TOMATOES
Celebrate Earth Day with eco-friendly activities, including a Tomatoes from Space experiment, a Food Waste Warrior Challenge and more. Tomatoes from Space is a fun experiment that involves planning, prediction, and hands-on learning. Children will learn the basics of planting while being introduced to ways in which you can grow your own food and make healthy choices for both humans and the planet. Each child will have materials to plant their own tomato seeds. Children will also learn how to be a waste warrior by exploring new ways to fight food waste. This free event is recommended for grades 1 through 7. Seeds are provided by the Tomatosphere Project.
When: April 20 from 2 to 3 p.m.
KING: COMMUNITY CLEAN UP
Celebrate Earth Week by participating in the annual King Community Clean Up. Help pick up litter to keep parks, streets, ditches, and neighbourhoods clean and green. Select a public space you would like to clean up. Invite friends, family and neighbours to join your cleanup group or to create another group. STOUFFVILLE: EARTH DAY CRAFT
Celebrate Earth Day by creating crafts using recycled materials. The library will supply everything you need to make a fun and eco-friendly piece while learning about environmental awareness. This event is open to all ages.

RICHMOND HILL:
HEALTHY YARDS PLANT AND GARDEN SALE
Richmond Hill organizes the Healthy Yards Plant and Garden Sale for native trees, shrubs, rain barrels and other outdoor items from April 22 to May 20, while supplies last. Note: There is a limit of five trees and/or shrubs, one wildflower kit, two rain barrels and one composter per household.

EARTH DAY FILM AND FAMILY FUN
Free popcorn (bring a container) and eco-inspired games and crafts, as well as a screening of “The Nature of Things” documentary “Ice and Fire” are planned for this no-registration event.

MARKHAM: A SERIES OF EVENTS
Markham has planned a series of events to help celebrate Earth Month and encourage residents to take a stand to live a more sustainable lifestyle all year long. Enter a photo contest, learn about Markham initiatives and how you can take action. This free event is for all ages and aims to provide you with fun, educational perspectives on environmental initiatives. There will be an array of attractions, including free electric vehicle (EV) test drives, a sustainability fair, live animals, children’s storytime, prize giveaways and more.
When: April 22 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

VAUGHAN: 20-MINUTE MAKEOVER
Every year in April, in honour of Earth Day, Vaughan residents can take part in the city’s 20-Minute Makeover community litter cleanup.
Here’s how to take part in this year’s weeklong cleanup: Gather a team, select a date; pick a public location in your neighbourhood to help clean; email environment@vaughan.ca to register. Be ready to clean your selected location on your preferred day for 20 minutes.

FUN ACTIVITIES AND COMPLIMENTARY SEED KITS
Celebrate Earth Day by participating in fun activities and picking up free seed kits at the Discover Georgina Show.

PIONEER VILLAGE SEED PAPER DROP-IN PROGRAM
Georgina Pioneer Village has a fun family activity for people ages four and older. Make plantable seed paper using local wildflower seeds. Take it home, let it dry and then it’s ready to be planted. Seed paper is an eco-friendly way to recycle commonly wasted materials and plant native flowers. Seed Paper is a great option to use for a card. Write your message, deliver it and then the recipient can plant it. It’s a thoughtful and zero-waste gift. Cost is $10 (plus HST for ages 15+). You must register in advance for this drop-in program.
