Last month we started hearing reports about Nicolas Cage being in talks with Sony to star in a live-action Spider-Man noir show. The show has been in development for a few years now, with Sony and Amazon joint-producing it, alongside Silk: Spider-Society. While the report was largely unsubstantiated, we now have confirmation directly from the horse's mouth.

Speaking to Collider at SXSW ‘24 while promoting his next film, Arcadian, Cage confirmed that he’s had discussions with Sony regarding reprising the role.

“Well, I can say that we have been talking,” he said. “It's no secret that I love the character. I think the character provides another mash up of sorts. I can combine my favorite golden age performances, i.e. Robinson, Cagney, Bogart, with a character that is, I guess, widely considered [to be] Stan Lee's masterpiece. I see it as a kind of foray into a pop art mash up of, sort of, a [Jungian] Lichtenstein, mash up by way of Bogart and Cagney, but nothing's definitive yet. It's just conversation.”

The earlier report made it seem like the involvement of Spider-Verse creators Phil Lord and Chris Miller may have been the deciding factor in convincing Cage to reprise the role. Oren Uziel, who worked on John Wick 4, Borderlands, and 2021’s Mortal Kombat will be taking on the writing and executive producer duties on the show.

Besides Spider-Man Noir, Sony’s other Marvel-based show, Silk, is being reportedly “refocused with a more male-skewing audience in mind.” The show’s writers’ room was supposed to reconvene earlier this year, but with the rate at which it’s moving forward, we may see Cindy Moon in Insomniac’s Spider-Man 3 video game before her own show.

Sony is currently at a crossroads - its latest Spider-verse spinoff, Madame Web, flopped hard with critics, audiences, and at the box office. The previous SSU film, Morbius, suffered a similar fate. This year’s Kraven, starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson looks fun, but it’s very possible that it too may not be up to the standard that audiences expect modern superhero movies to reach. The only known property that is expected to do well is Venom 3, recently retitled Venom: The Last Dance and Sony seems confident in it to have moved it up by a month.
