Mother and 5-Year-Old Daughter Killed in Texas Highway Crash on Easter: ‘It Breaks My Heart’

A family was involved in an Easter weekend crash that left a young mother and her 5-year-old daughter dead.

Authorities believe the family may have been traveling to celebrate Easter when they were involved in Sunday’s deadly crash on U.S. Route 90 near Uvalde Road, according to NBC affiliate KPRC-TV and ABC affiliate KTRK-TV.

The driver apparently “lost control of the vehicle” around the 13000 block of US-90, causing the car to leave the roadway and roll “several times” Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said in a series of posts on X.

A 25-year-old woman and young girl were ejected from the vehicle during the crash, Gonzalez said. They were transported via Lifeflight to the hospital, where they were later pronounced dead.

The victims killed in the crash have been identified as mother Tiffany Rodriguez and her 5-year-old daughter Ariella, Gonzalez said, according to KTRK-TV and CBS affiliate KHOU. (Police originally identified Ariella as being 6 years old.)

A 26-year-old man and two other children, an infant — later identified by Gonzalez as a 2 month old, per the reports — and 2-year-old boy, were also hospitalized after the incident but are “expected to survive.”

Neither adult appeared to be wearing a seatbelt during the single-car crash, but all three children appeared to be belted into their seats, Gonzalez said.

Excessive speed was “a likely contributing factor” in Sunday’s crash, Gonzalez said on X.

“At some point, maybe, as they began losing control of the vehicle, perhaps they overcorrected causing them to leave the roadway, leaving a long trail into the grassy area,” the sheriff said, per KPRC-TV.

Gonzalez said investigators found “some new clothes” that the family was “perhaps” going to wear later in the day, as well as some Easter eggs at the site of the crash, KPRC-TV reported.

“It’s very tragic, especially on such a special day,” the sheriff added. “It breaks my heart coming to some of these scenes and and seeing the small shoes of a toddler especially being a parent. That always hits home.”
